USA Judo World Cup 2012. A brilliant event and a glimpse into USA Judo future success…

On the brilliant Opening Ceremony for the IJF US Judo World Cup all authorities from the City of Doral were present. “The support of the authorities from the City is fundamental to encourage this kind of events to continue taking place in this community” expressed Mr. Jose Humberto Rodríguez, CEO of USA Judo. Furthermore, Mr. Juan Carlos Bermudez, City of Doral Mayor stressed the importance of the event as it “gives us the chance of showcasing the many possibilities our city has for hosting this kind of international events. It is very positive in every aspect, we have many new visitors that come and see our city for the first time, but this year is extra special, as we have the opportunity to see athletes from all over the world that are classified for the Olympics. It is a unique chance to see these elite athletes in friendly competition and also making our City known worldwide”.
As well, Mr. Marius L. Vizer, President of the International Judo Federation expressed that the World Cup was a very important event and praised the potential USA Judo athletes have for the upcoming London Olympics Games and in afterward. “I am expecting from US Judo to have more members in the future. Having a Gold Medal Judoka can popularize judo more than today. Also, having great Judokas in the past, they can give the next generation their experience, knowledge and management. I hope in London they will make history achieving the first Gold medal. I know how important it is for Judo in the US and I think the International Judo Federation will work definitely during the period 2013-16 with USA Judo, sharing with them more experience and management and push them to develop the sport in the country.”
The results of the World Cup were very encouraging for those expectations, as Miami native Hana Carmichael got a Gold Medal for the US; “It is her first big win and we are very excited for her” said Olympic medalist and Olympic Team Coach Mr. Jimmy Pedro, adding that “we love competing in America, as not very often we get to compete in our own country soil.” That day also there were also medals for Christal Ransom, Katie Sell and Bianca Lockette, who obtained silver and several bronze medals that went for Angelica Delgado, Ana Martin, George Truong, Aaron Kunihiro and Brad Bolen. Hold on to those names, Judo fans. We will hear a lot from them and many others in the upcoming years during their preparation for Rio 2016.
The highlight on the World Cup was that Ms. Kayla Harrison beat Yalennis Castillo from Cuba, winning the gold on a much anticipated fight. Ms. Castillo, medalist from the Cuban Olympic Team in Beijing also had just two weeks ago obtained the silver on the Pan American Championship in Montreal and it is likely to be part of the Cuban Olympic team to London as well, while Kayla is the top hopeful for a Gold Medal on the London Olympics from the US Judo Team.
Right after the World Cup, the US Open Championship took place, and it was the opportunity once more to see many of the young promises of the sport but moreover it brought the chance to define the last open spot on the USA Judo Olympic team, on the Hour of Power, between Nick DelPopolo and Michael Eldred.
Among the many names that excelled on the US Open were Veronica Prado, Lauren Baez, Adonis Diaz, Ernes Ojito, Austin Cook, Kyle Taketa and Myles Porter. For Coach Jhonny Prado, it was a very good performance of all athletes and he felt “very pleased on their achievements on the World Cup and the Open. These are great opportunities to gain the international experience they need to get to Rio 2016. The goal was to achieve medal positions and we did it. We are pleased and proud.”
The Hour of Power: Nick DelPopolo gets the Olympic Team Spot
Tension and excitement filled the Doral Spa Legends Ballroom at the moment of the Olympic Trial. Michael Eldred and Nick DelPopolo were to fight on a defining moment. “Both athletes are very talented and very skilled. Both have had good performances in the world level competition. It all depends. It is a very emotional competition. Whoever shows up focused; whoever is ready to win is going to win” said Coach Jimmy Pedro moments before the event.
With Michael Eldred was also present his stepfather, Mr. Robert Fukuda, recently selected to be the Olympic Referee representing US in London. Regarding that, he commented “I began preparing in 2004, taken my tests and passed, worked in the Pan Americans, started travelling internationally. Fortunately I have been able to keep advancing and got to be selected for the Olympics. It is going to be a great experience and prestige for our training center in Idaho”.
The fight was very intense as both competitors were very well prepared and ready for the event. Nick DelPopolo won by Ippon on the third match, earning his spot on the Olympic Team. Overwhelmed with emotions and very happy, Nick expressed his appreciation and deep gratitude for supporting the journey on pursuing this goal and helping him to achieve it, to his parents, his uncle, his girlfriend, his first sensei Yoshisada “Yone” Yonezuka, his coaches Jason Morris and Jimmy Pedro, his teammates, his fans and supporters and a special mention to Sensei Evelio Garcia.
Overall, Mr. Jose Humberto Rodriguez felt very pleased on the outcome of both the World Cup and the US Open. “Matches were of very high quality, we had a great crowd cheering for the teams and we hope in London, God permitting, to get the first Gold medal in Judo to the USA”.

Un evento brillante y una muestra del potencial del Equipo Olímpico

Todas las autoridades de la Ciudad de Doral estuvieron presentes en la brillante ceremonia de inauguración de la Copa Mundial de la Federación Internacional de Judo EE.UU 2012. “El apoyo de las autoridades de la ciudad es fundamental para fomentar este tipo de eventos y continuar realizándolos en esta comunidad”, expresó el Sr. José Humberto Rodríguez, Presidente de USA Judo. Por su parte, el Sr. Juan Carlos Bermúdez, Alcalde de la Ciudad de Doral hizo hincapié en la importancia del evento, pues “nos da la oportunidad de mostrar las muchas posibilidades que nuestra ciudad tiene para acoger este tipo de eventos internacionales. Es muy positivo en todos los aspectos, tenemos muchos visitantes que vienen a nuestra ciudad por primera vez, y este año es muy especial, ya que tenemos la oportunidad de ver a los atletas de todo el mundo que se clasificaron para los Juegos Olímpicos. Es único poder ver a estos atletas de élite en competencia amistosa y también hacer que nuestra ciudad sea conocida en todo el mundo”.
El Sr. Marius Vizer, Presidente de la Federación Internacional de Judo dijo que la Copa del Mundo fue un evento muy importante y elogió el potencial que los atletas de judo de Estados Unidos tienen para los próximos Juegos Olímpicos de Londres. “Estoy esperando que el Judo en EE.UU. tenga más miembros en el futuro. Que un Judoka logre traer una medalla de oro de judo puede popularizar más el deporte. Hubo grandes judokas en el pasado, y ellos pueden dar a la próxima generación su experiencia, y conocimiento. Espero que en Londres, este equipo pase a la historia por lograr la primera medalla de oro. Sé lo importante que es para el Judo en los EE.UU. y creo que la Federación Internacional de Judo definitivamente apoyará durante el período 2013-16 a USA Judo, compartiendo con ellos una mayor experiencia para impulsarlos a desarrollar el deporte en el país”.
Los resultados de la Copa del Mundo son muy alentadores y alineados con las expectativas, ya que Hana Carmichael, nacida en Miami, consiguió una medalla de oro para los EE.UU.: “Es su primera gran victoria y estamos muy contentos por ella”, dijo el medallista olímpico y entrenador del equipo olímpico Sr. Jimmy Pedro, y agregó que “nos gusta competir en Estados Unidos, pues pocas veces se llega a competir en nuestro propio suelo.” En la Copa hubo también medallas para Christal Ransom, Katie Sell y Bianca Lockette, quienes obtuvieron plata y varias medallas de bronce para Angélica Delgado, Ana Martin, George Truong, Aarón Kunihiro y Brad Bolen. Los fanáticos deben recordar estos nombres. Escucharemos mucho de ellos entre otros durante su preparación para Rio 2016.
Lo más destacado en la Copa del Mundo fue que la Srta. Kayla Harrison, principal esperanza del oro olímpico para EEUU, venció a Yalennis Castillo de Cuba, ganando el oro en un combate muy esperado. La Srta. Castillo, medallista del equipo olímpico cubano en Beijing, también había hace apenas dos semanas obtenido la plata en el Campeonato Panamericano en Montreal y es probable que sea parte del equipo olímpico de Cuba para Londres.
Inmediatamente después de la Copa del Mundo se llevó a cabo el Campeonato Abierto de los EE.UU que no solo fue la oportunidad para ver muchas de las jóvenes promesas de este deporte, sino que allí se definió el ultimo cupo del Equipo Olímpico de EEUU en La Hora de Poder, entre Nick DelPopolo y Michael Eldred.
Entre los muchos nombres que han destacado en el Abierto de EE.UU. estuvieron Verónica Prado, Lauren Báez, Adonis Díaz, Ernes Ojito, Austin Cook, Kyle Taketa y Myles Porter. Para el entrenador Jhonny Prado, hubo un muy buen desempeño de todos los atletas y manifestó que se sentía “muy satisfecho de los logros en la Copa del Mundo y el Open. Estas son grandes oportunidades para ganar la experiencia internacional que necesitan para llegar a Río 2016. El objetivo era alcanzar posiciones de medalla y lo hicimos. Estamos muy contentos y orgullosos”.
La Hora de Poder. Nick DelPopolo se integra al Equipo Olímpico 2012
La tensión y la emoción llenaron el salón Legends del Doral Spa en el momento de la prueba. Michael Eldred y Nick DelPopolo lucharon en un momento decisivo. “Ambos atletas son muy talentosos y muy calificados. Ambos han tenido buenas actuaciones en la competencia de nivel mundial. Es cuestión de suerte. Es una competencia muy emocionante. El que venga enfocado y este listo para ganar, ganará” dijo el entrenador Olimpico Jimmy Pedro momentos antes del evento.
Junto a Michael Eldred también estuvo presente su padrastro, el señor Robert Fukuda, recientemente seleccionado para ser el Arbitro Olímpico que representante de EE.UU. en Londres. Sobre eso comentó: “Me empecé a preparar en 2004, he pasado todas las pruebas. Trabajé en los Panamericanos a nivel internacional. Afortunadamente he sido capaz de seguir avanzando y de ser seleccionado para los Juegos Olímpicos. Va a ser una gran experiencia y prestigio para nuestro Centro de Entrenamiento de Judo en Idaho”.
La lucha fue muy intensa pues ambos competidores estaban muy bien preparados y listos para el evento. Nick DelPopolo ganó por Ippon en el tercer combate, obteniendo su lugar en el equipo olímpico. Abrumado por las emociones y muy feliz, Nick expresó su profunda gratitud por el apoyo en la consecución de este objetivo a sus padres, su tío, su novia, su primer sensei Yoshisada “Yone” Yonezuka, a sus entrenadores Jason Morris y Jimmy Pedro, sus compañeros de equipo, sus fans y seguidores y una mención especial al Sensei Evelio García.
Para concluir, el Sr. José Humberto Rodríguez se sintió muy satisfecho de los resultados de la Copa Mundial y el Abierto de EE.UU. “Las peleas fueron de muy alta calidad, hemos tenido un gran concurrencia animando a los equipos y esperamos que en Londres, si Dios lo permite, consigamos la primera medalla de oro en judo para los EE.UU.”
