After 54 years: PGA TOUR EVENT WITHDRAWAL FROM DORAL WILL HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON OUR CITY
The PGA Tour decision affects hotels, shops and other tourism businesses of Doral, as well as the sport tradition of the city

An economic blow to the economy and history of our city, that is how the members of the Municipal Council described the PGA Tour decision of taking the Golf World Championship to another location which had taken place in Doral since 1962.
Recently, the PGA Tour announced their decision to end the 54-year relationship they had maintained with the Trump National Doral court arguing that they were unable to find a sponsor to replace Cadillac, and that contract ended this year. Tim Finchem, PGA Tour commissioner, stated that this decision was not based in political reasons.
Nevertheless, the general public still doubts regarding the real reasons for moving such prestigious sport activity to another city, just when Donald Trump (who bought the facilities on 2012 and spent 250 million dollars in renovations) is the middle of a controversial presidential campaign.
The tournament will take place at the Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico under the name of Mexico Championship after the PGA Tour reached a seven year agreement with the Salinas Group, a group of companies belonging to multimillionaire Ricardo Salinas and his son, Benjamín.
LUIGI BORIA: DORAL IS A CITY IN MOVEMENT
“Doral is a city in movement”. With this phrase Doral’s Mayor and re-election candidate, Luigi Boria, explained his opinion regarding the PGA Tour from our city, after admitting that even though it is a sad decision that affects us in a negative manner, it is important to keep going forward and support new tournaments and activities in general.
“It is truly an economic blow for Doral and for Miami-Dade county and we hope that this tournament returns to our city, yet we are not only about golf, we have many important companies such as media networks, transportation and logistic businesses which are essential for Doral’s economy”, claimed Boria.
He added that there are 80 thousand jobs in our city and our hotels are at 95% of their full capacity all year round, “therefore the truth is that we have many options for growth and commercial development. Besides we are a city with infinite virtues, capable of attracting many championships, tournaments and international events, and that is what we must focus on”.
CHRISTI FRAGA: ECONOMICALLY NEGATIVE
Deputy Mayor Christi Fraga focuses on the economic aspect of the decision by pointing out that it financially affects the city and even the Miami-Dade County, which received the extraordinary contribution of approximately 40 million dollars for this event and will no longer receive.
“In the case of our city alone, it is obvious that our businesses, restaurants and hotels will be affected, for during the entire celebration of this golf world tournament we received many tourists who generated important profits for them and thus, it contributed with the promotion and growth of Doral”, claimed Fraga.
Deputy Mayor Fraga explained that last year, representatives of the PGA Tour had already submitted a notification to the City of Doral, informing that they would not be carrying out the tournament here. She added that although we asked them to consider the services we provided for them in our city, the virtues of Trump National Doral facilities and the history of this event at this location, they still decided to leave for now.
SANDRA RUIZ: FINANCIALLY AND HISTORICALLY SAD
Counsel woman and candidate to Doral’s Mayor office, Sandra Ruíz described the PGA Tour’s decision as a sad fact, not only financially, which is obvious, yet also in regards to the history of our city. “It is like a breach in the sport tradition of Doral, for even if they return in a future, the historic sequence has been broken”.
“It is a shame that we have lost the golf world championship within this administration, as since last year they had warned us that they would withdraw from Doral, and there was nothing we could do to avoid it, in order to procure new sponsors”, argued councilwoman Ruíz.
“PGA representatives have been very subtle and respectful on their comments regarding this decision and it is important to highlight that their offices will remain in Miami and that Mr. Andrés Gaviria has done an amazing job, for which I believe we should join efforts with Miami-Dade county in order to seek their return”.
“Lets remember that we are a multicultural city that welcomes many activities, therefore I believe it is important that we re-organize ourselves and work together to further our development and keep offering better alternatives to our residents, businesses and visitors”, added Ruíz.
ANA MARIA RODRIGUEZ: IT WAS PART OF OUR COMMUNITY
For councilwoman Ana María Rodríguez the golf world championship was part of our community and it was an activity that placed our city in the international radar. “Regardless of our political party of preference or what country we came from, this sport event was a motive of happiness for all residents of Doral”.
“The residents of Doral felt this tournament as theirs, and they understood its importance. Even when the traffic became terrible during the days of the event no one claimed anything, on the contrary, those days were considered days of celebration for the city”, added councilwoman Rodríguez.
Although she respects the decision made by the PGA Tour, she is sorry that the city is paying the consequences for something they are not responsibility for, because as a government entity the city always supported the event, even with police reinforcement and the operative organization of the city during the days the sport activity took place.
PETE CABRERA: IT WAS PART OF OUR HISTORY
Like his fellow men and women at the Municipal Council, councilman Pete Cabrera is sorry about the withdrawal of the PGA Tour from Doral, as he believes this sport activity was part of our history and furthermore it helped Doral become a city recognized worldwide.
Nevertheless, he did not hesitate to recognize that the city and the city council have grown a lot in the last few years and that now Doral is recognized in many other areas besides golf. “We have grown as a city and we have reached important levels of development which today allow us to host many prestigious and internationally renowned activities”, explained councilman Cabrera.
The truth is this tournament had been part of our community for 54 years, bringing important financial contributions to Doral and the Miami-Dade county, as well as to the business men and women of the area and several charitable organizations, nevertheless, it is important to focus on the future of our city, its new projects, events and tournaments which we welcome as they will contribute to the full development of Doral.

SALIDA DEL PGA TOUR DE DORAL IMPACTA NEGATIVAMENTE A LA CIUDAD
La decisión del PGA Tour afecta a los hoteles, comercios y demás empresas turísticas de Doral, así como a la tradición deportiva de esta ciudad

Como un golpe económico para la economía y la historia de nuestra ciudad, calificaron los miembros del Concejo Municipal la decisión del PGA Tour de trasladar a otra locación la realización del Campeonato Mundial de Golf que se había celebrado en Doral desde 1962.
Recientemente, El PGA Tour anunció que terminó la relación de 54 años que mantuvo con el campo Trump National Doral porque no pudo encontrar un patrocinador que sustituyera a Cadillac, cuyo contrato se acabó este año. Tim Finchem, comisionado del PGA Tour, aseguró que esta decisión no estaba basada en razones políticas.
Sin embargo, dentro de la opinión pública en general, prevalece la duda sobre las verdaderas razones de trasladar esta prestigiosa actividad deportiva a otra ciudad, justo en el momento en el que Donald Trump (quien compró las instalaciones en 2012 y gastó 250 millones de dólares para renovarlas) desarrolla una campaña presidencial con marcados tintes controversiales.
El torneo se jugará en el Club de Golf Chapultepec de México y pasará a llamarse Mexico Championship después de que el PGA Tour llegara a un acuerdo de siete años con el Grupo Salinas, un conjunto de empresas del magnate multimillonario Ricardo Salinas y su hijo, Benjamín.
LUIGI BORIA: DORAL ES UNA CIUDAD EN MOVIMIENTO
“Doral es una ciudad en movimiento”. Con esta frase el alcalde doralino y candidato a la re-elección, Luigi Boria, explicó su opinión sobre la salida del PGA Tour de nuestra localidad, al considerar que si bien es una decisión lamentable que impacta negativamente a la ciudad, es importante seguir hacía delante y apoyar nuevos torneos y actividades en general.
“Realmente es un golpe económico considerable para Doral y para el condado de Miami-Dade y esperamos que este torneo regrese a nuestra ciudad. Nos afecta que cualquier organización se retire de la ciudad, pero no somos sólo golf, tenemos muchísimas empresas importantes como medios de comunicación y compañías de transporte y logística que son vitales para las finanzas de Doral”, señaló Boria.
Agregó que en Doral hay 80 mil puestos de trabajo y los hoteles de la ciudad están al 95% de su capacidad durante todo el año, “así que la verdad es que tenemos muchas opciones de crecimiento y desarrollo comercial. Además somos una ciudad con infinitas virtudes, con capacidad para atraer a muchos campeonatos, torneos y eventos internacional y es en eso en lo que debemos concentrarnos”.
CHRISTI FRAGA: ECONOMICAMENTE NEGATIVO
La vice-alcaldesa Christi Fraga se centra en el aspecto económico de esta decisión al señalar que afecta monetariamente a la ciudad e incluso al condado de Miami-Dade, para el cual significaba un aporte extraordinario de una suma aproximada a los 40 millones de dólares que, ahora, dejaran de percibirse.
“Por sólo hablar de nuestra ciudad, es obvio, que nuestros comerciantes, restaurantes y hoteles se verán afectados, pues durante la celebración de este torneo de golf mundial recibíamos a muchos turistas que generaban importantes ganancias para todos ellos y por ende, contribuía con la promoción y crecimiento de Doral”, argumentó Fraga.
Explico la vice-alcaldesa Fraga que, el año pasado, los representantes del PGA Tour ya habían pasado una notificación a la Ciudad de Doral informando que no realizarían el torneo aquí y aunque se les solicitó que tomaran en cuentan las prestaciones que ofrece nuestra ciudad, las virtudes de las instalaciones del Trump National Doral y la historia de este evento en esta localidad, ellos decidieron marcharse por ahora.
SANDRA RUIZ: FINANCIERA E HISTORICAMENTE LAMENTABLE
La concejal y aspirante a la alcaldía de Doral, Sandra Ruíz calificó la decisión del PGA Tour como un hecho lamentable, no sólo en el aspecto financiero, lo cual es obvio, sino también en lo relativo a la historia de nuestra ciudad. “Es como una brecha en la tradición deportiva de Doral, pues aunque regresen en un futuro, ya se quebró la secuencia histórica”.
“Es una pena que hayamos perdido al campeonato mundial de golf dentro de esta administración, pues ya desde el año pasado ellos habían advertido que se retirarían de Doral y no se pudo hacer nada para evitarlo, para ayudar a conseguir nuevos patrocinantes”, comenta la concejal Ruíz.
“Los representantes del PGA han sido muy sutiles y respetuosos en sus comentarios sobre esta decisión y es importante destacar que sus oficinas se quedan en Miami y que el señor Andrés Gaviria ha hecho un trabajo extraordinario, por lo que creo que debemos unirnos con el condado de Miami-Dade para lograr que regresen”.
“Recordemos que somos una ciudad multicultural en la que le damos la bienvenida a muchas actividades, por lo que creo que es importante re-organizarnos y trabajar unidos para desarrollarnos cada vez más y ofrecer mejores alternativas para nuestros residentes, empresas y visitantes”, agregó Ruíz.
ANA MARIA RODRIGUEZ: ERA PARTE DE NUESTRA COMUNIDAD
Para la concejal Ana María Rodríguez el torneo mundial de golf era parte de nuestra comunidad y era una un actividad que identificaba a la ciudad a nivel internacional. “No importaba de que partido político éramos o de que país veníamos, para todos los residentes de Doral, la realización de este evento deportivo era un motivo de alegría”.
“Los residentes de Doral sentían como suyo este torneo y entendían su importancia. Incluso, como es lógico, el tráfico aumentaba en esos días y esto no se convertía en un motivo de queja, por el contrario, era una fecha especial en la ciudad que se impregnaba de un ambiente de celebración”, agrega la concejal Rodríguez.
Si bien respeta la decisión del PGA Tour, lamenta que la ciudad esté pagando las consecuencias sobre algo que no tiene responsabilidad, pues como ente gubernamental siempre prestó todo su apoyo al evento, incluso con el respaldo policial y la organización de la operatividad de la ciudad durante los días en que se realizaba la actividad deportiva.
PETE CABRERA: FUE PARTE DE NUESTRA HISTORIA
Al igual que sus compañeros en el Concejo Municipal, el concejal Pete Cabrera lamentó la partida del PGA Tour del territorio doralino, al considerar que esta actividad deportiva formaba parte de nuestra historia e incluso, colaboró a que Doral fuese una ciudad reconocida a nivel internacional.
Sin embargo, no dejó de reconocer que la ciudad y el ayuntamiento han madurado mucho en los últimos años y ahora Doral es reconocida en muchas otras áreas, además del golf. “Hemos crecido como ciudad y alcanzado importantes niveles de desarrollo que nos hacen tener capacidad para dar cobijo a muchas actividades prestigiosas y de renombre internacional”, explicó el concejal Cabrera.
Lo cierto es que este torneo había sido parte de nuestra comunidad durante 54 años, realizando importantes aportes a la economía de Doral y del condado de Miami-Dade, así como a los comerciantes de la zona y a varias organizaciones benéficas, sin embargo, es importante concentrar el futuro de la ciudad en los nuevos proyectos, eventos y torneos a los que podemos darle la bienvenida para contribuir al pleno desarrollo de Doral.
