Doral Academy High and Middle Schools Math Club… A Successful Team

Highly motivated students and inspiring teachers from the Math Honor Society at Doral Academy are surely making a difference in all competitions in which they have participated during the past few months. The list is long, and includes well renowned competitions such Middlementary Math Bonanza, those taking place at St. Thomas and Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), in which Doral Academy students placed 1st, and University of Miami- David Essner in which students placed 3rd in the county.
It is not easy to find a math team from one single school that has achieved what Doral Academy Math Club students have: winning places in every division, multiple first places winners and even one of the students ending up winning a scholarship after one competition. One of their students, an 8th grader, got a perfect score on the standardized test last year and the president of the club, a senior student, just got accepted at Brown University, one of the eight Ivy league universities.
These results make the entire school proud, especially the teachers Mr. Sam Koski and Ms. Elizabeth Manning who are the two leader in a group of seven teachers who run the Math Honor Society at Doral Academy. They have seen the transformation of the math club, which in just three years, have skyrocketed from only five students to a group of over 100, and the number continue to grow as more students discover the fun hidden in mathematics.
They shared with Doral Family Journal what the key factors of success are: motivated students, committed teachers and the right tools provided by a very supportive administration.
Students with High Motivation and Teamwork Spirit
The mission of the Doral Academy Math Honor Society, is “promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school education. This organization is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in the students”.
Judging by the level of enthusiasm and effort that these students demonstrate, it can be said that this objective has been fully met. Just to have an idea of how much work this group does in order to improve their skills, Ms. Lisa Wever, an active volunteer that support the team commented: “The kids come to school every day an hour early for Early Bird math class, which starts at 6:30 am. Sometimes they have national contests, which involve getting to school at six am to finish the test before their regular school day starts. They also have team practices after school several days a week.”
Yet it is not only about time spent on the practices, as Ms. Manning says, it is a real team effort. “These kids help each other to do better. They have a very good sense of teamwork, they support each other no matter what grade level they are in”.
That partnership also allows them to solve even the toughest questions, as Mr. Koski adds: “We challenge the students with high level work, and they know how to work it out together. It doesn’t matter how long it takes for them to find the solution, they join their skills to find the answer.”
Ms. Manning also shared that having the opportunity to teach that special group of students motivates her to go early to work every day. “They are fun, they want to learn… I don’t have to drag them they drag me. I feel I’m lucky having the kind of kids we have.”
Highly Qualified and Passionate Teachers
Mr. Koski, Ms. Manning, Mr. Acosta, Ms. Amoedo Mr. Pulido, Ms. Viyella and Mr. Diaz, are the “right teachers” as Principal Mr. Ferralls described them when saying: “Having a program like this one is only possible because of the commitment of good teachers. This requires a good investment of time, talent, and hard work.”
“Our teachers are very knowledgeable. They have the experience and the method to communicate what they know about motivation to the students. If you have the opportunity to seat in one of those research math classes or participate in the before or after school program, you’ll notice that what they do is special. They speak in a different language, they are at a very high level…these teachers are really amazing.”
In Mr. Ferralls’s opinion, the Math Club teachers are also committed to teach their students important tools for their future. He states that these excellent educators not only know what they do, yet they also take a moment to teach their students important lessons about life and how to use what they learn to become well-rounded human beings.
“Education is more than just academics. By participating in this math program our students are learning not only math, but they are getting to know how to be successful in life. They are developing social skills, learning how to think out of the box, and finding solutions to their problems with the resources they have at hand”.
On this point, Ms. Manning and Mr. Koski speak by their own experience: “Honestly I get something really rewarding doing what I do, and at the end of the day, I know that I am supporting someone to be successful.”… “I want them to have a level of confidence so they can handle any challenge in life. I want them to know that struggles are only going to help them become stronger.”
Mr. Ferralls says that this program has excelled tremendously, but “we must admit that we wouldn’t be where we are right now if we didn’t have these group of students and teachers.”
Administration Support, Quality of Teaching and Right Tools
Ms. Manning pointed out a third element that is crucial to this program, the administration support. “Doral Academy administration fully supports this program. They are always there providing all the tools we need, and that makes a huge difference”.
Mr. Ferralls adds, “We support our teachers from the beginning of the year by giving them all the resources they need to be successful. From technical resources, such as white boards and technology, to any type of materials they might need to deliver the instruction. On top of that, we worry about their personal development, we want to be there for them.”
Maybe one of the most important ways Doral Academy supports their teachers is allowing them to apply in their classroom the techniques and initiatives they consider necessary to teach math in a fun and attractive way. Both Ms. Manning and Mr. Koski agreed on the opinion that students are not taught math the right way since the very beginning. For many students math is just a very hard or boring subject. By being able to apply their proved ways of teaching, the students are getting the best results in all the competitions they have participated at.
“The whole system has changed and the tests are getting harder, a regular class kid may not know how to solve the prompts of these tests. We need to teach them differently. We use high-level textbooks, which include problems that can take our students days to solve but they work hard until they get the answer. We also use a lot of visuals and computerized models to prepare them,” says Mr. Koski.
He continues describing how their method is so unique: “The brain is visual. Our kids are motivated because they discover Math, when they “see” math alive. They need to know how things work in order to understand them, not just memorize the formulas from a textbook. When something is hard, we build it, because we want them to visualize it. When they see it, they can understand how it works, they can understand the equation, and that is what makes the difference, everything make sense, the rules make sense. They start thinking on the possibilities and they have an extra power because, from the picture, they can solve it, they can discuss their choices and conclude what the answer is, and it won’t be a mechanic answer.“
The abilities the students are learning from these technics help them to compete with other students, getting a different perspective on what they really are competing against, and this makes them want to work even harder to reach their goals.
Doral Academy next Competitions
Math Club students are getting ready for their official Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society competition season which starts now in January 2016. The season consists of six Saturday competitions throughout the state, every two weeks, which includes the State Convention in Orlando in April, and the National Convention in St. Louis in July. In addition to the Mu Alpha Theta events, the team will participate in a very long list of contests throughout the year.
This group is committed to continue working hard to improve their skills and continue making a difference in these competitions. They have all the means to continue making this community proud as Principal Mr. Ferrals concludes:
“When you put together talented teachers, highly motivated students, and the right tools, you have the formula for success … then the sky is the limit. I feel very proud, and it is a privilege to be an official in such a great school as Doral Academy.”

Exitoso Equipo de Estudiantes de Educación Media y Secundaria

La unión de estudiantes altamente motivados e inspiradores maestros de la Sociedad de Honor de Matemáticas en Doral Academy está marcando la diferencia en todas las competencias en las que han participado recientemente. La lista es larga, e incluye competencias de renombre tales como “Middlementary Math Bonanza”, St. Thomas y Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), en la que los estudiantes de Doral Academy ganaron primer lugar, así como la competencia de la Universidad de Miami-David Essner en la que consiguieron tercer lugar en el condado.
No es fácil encontrar un equipo de matemáticas de la misma escuela que haya logrado lo que los estudiantes del Doral Academy: Múltiples ganadores de primeros lugares y en cada división en competencias, estudiantes que terminan obteniendo una beca después de una competencia, un estudiante de 8vo grado con puntaje perfecto en los exámenes estandarizados y la presidente del Club de Matemática aceptada en Brown University, una de las ocho universidades ‘Ivy League’.
Estos resultados hacen que toda la escuela se sienta orgullosa de su esfuerzo y especialmente los profesores Sam Koski y Elizabeth Manning, los líderes en un grupo de siete educadores que dirigen la Sociedad de Honor de Matemáticas en Doral Academy. Ellos han visto la transformación y crecimiento del club a lo largo del tiempo, de sólo cinco estudiantes, a un grupo de más de 100, con adiciones cada día a medida que más estudiantes descubren la diversión que esconden las matemáticas.
Estos profesores compartieron con Doral Family Journal los factores clave de éxito de su club: estudiantes motivados, maestros comprometidos y herramientas adecuadas proporcionados por una administración que apoya integralmente.
Estudiantes con Alta Motivación y Espíritu de Trabajo en Equipo
La misión de esta Sociedad de Honor es “promover el estudio de las matemáticas como parte integrante de la educación secundaria. Esta organización se dedica a inspirar gran interés en la materia y contribuir con el disfrute de las matemáticas en los estudiantes”.
A juzgar por el nivel de entusiasmo y esfuerzo que estos alumnos demuestran, se hace evidente que ese objetivo se ha cumplido plenamente. Así lo asegura la Sra. Lisa Wever, voluntaria activa de este grupo, que da una idea del duro trabajo que los jóvenes dedican para afilar sus destrezas: “Diariamente estos chicos van a la escuela una hora antes de su horario regular para la práctica de matemáticas que comienza a las 6:30 am. A veces tienen concursos nacionales que implican llegar a la escuela a las seis de la mañana para terminar sus pruebas. También se quedan después de clases para continuar sus prácticas grupales varios días a la semana”.
Sin embargo, no es sólo el tiempo dedicado a las prácticas lo que hace a estos alumnos singulares, como dice la profesora Manning, es su esfuerzo real en trabajar en conjunto. “Estos jóvenes se ayudan entre sí para dar lo mejor. Tienen un muy buen sentido del trabajo en equipo y se apoyan mutuamente sin importar el grado en el que están”.
La sinergia que existe entre ellos también les permite resolver incluso las preguntas más difíciles, como el profesor Koski añade: “Desafiamos a los estudiantes con problemas de alto nivel y ellos consiguen la manera de resolverlos. No importa cuánto tiempo les tome encontrar la solución, ellos unen sus habilidades para encontrar la respuesta”.
Para la profesora Manning, el enseñar a un grupo tan especial como este es un estímulo para ir a trabajar tan temprano cada día. “Estos estudiantes son divertidos y realmente quieren aprender… no tengo que arrastrarlos a venir, ellos me arrastran a mí. Es una gran suerte contar con el tipo de chicos que tenemos”.
Maestros Altamente Calificados y Apasionados por su Trabajo
El grupo de profesores: Sr. Koski, Sra. Manning, Sr. Acosta, Sra Amoedo Sr. Pulido, Sra Viyella y el Sr. Díaz, son los “maestros correctos” a los que se refiere el director Sr. Ferralls al decir: “Un programa como éste sólo es posible gracias al compromiso de buenos profesores, pues requiere una gran inversión de tiempo, talento y trabajo duro”.
“Nuestros profesores están muy capacitados. Ellos tienen la experiencia y el método para comunicar lo que saben y motivar a los estudiantes. Si alguno tiene la oportunidad de sentarse en una de esas clases de investigación de matemática o participar el club antes o después de la escuela, se dará cuenta que lo que hacen es especial. Ellos hablan en un idioma diferente, están en un nivel muy alto… estos profesores son realmente sorprendentes”.
En opinión del Sr. Ferralls, los profesores del club también se han comprometido con enseñar a sus estudiantes herramientas importantes para su futuro. El afirma que estos excelentes educadores no sólo saben bien lo que hacen, sino que además se toman el tiempo para transmitirle a sus alumnos lecciones importantes y cómo utilizar lo que aprenden para convertirse en seres humanos integrales.
“La educación es mucho más que solo la parte academia. Al participar en este club nuestros estudiantes no solo aprenden matemáticas, están entrenándose en cómo tener éxito en la vida: desarrollando habilidades sociales, aprendiendo a pensar fuera de la caja y buscando soluciones a los problemas con los recursos que tienen a mano”.
Sobre este punto, los profesores Koski y Manning comparten su experiencia: “Honestamente lo que hago es un trabajo realmente gratificante. Al final del día sé que estoy apoyando a alguien para obtener éxito”…” Deseo que mis estudiantes tengan un nivel de confianza que les permita manejar cualquier reto en la vida. Quiero que sepan que los retos sólo van a ayudarles a ser más fuertes”.
El director Ferralls confirma que este programa se ha destacado enormemente, pero que “hay que admitir que no estaríamos donde estamos ahora mismo, si no tuviéramos este excepcional grupo de estudiantes y profesores.”
Apoyo a la Administración, Calidad de la Enseñanza y Herramientas Adecuadas
La Profesora Manning indicó un tercer elemento que es crucial para el éxito del programa: el apoyo de la administración. “La Administración de Doral Academy nos apoya plenamente. Ellos están activamente proporcionando todas las herramientas que necesitamos, y eso hace una gran diferencia”.
El Sr. Ferralls añade: “Apoyamos a nuestros maestros desde el comienzo del año, dándoles todos los recursos que necesitan para tener éxito. Desde recursos técnicos, como pizarras, computadoras y sistemas, como cualquier otro tipo de materiales que pudieran necesitar para facilitar la instrucción. Además de eso, nos preocupamos por su desarrollo personal y los apoyamos plenamente”.
Tal vez una de las formas más importantes en la que Doral Academy apoya a sus maestros es permitiéndoles aplicar las técnicas e iniciativas que consideren necesarias para enseñar matemáticas de una manera atractiva y divertida. Tanto la Sra Manning como el Sr. Koski coinciden en la opinión que los jóvenes no se les enseña matemáticas de la manera correcta desde el principio y por eso para muchos estudiantes, matemática es una materia difícil y aburrida. Al ser capaz de aplicar técnicas propias de instrucción, los resultados han sido exitosos y se evidencian en las competencias que han ganado los estudiantes.
“Todo el sistema ha cambiado y las pruebas son cada vez más difíciles, los estudiantes de una clase regular pueden no saber cómo resolverlas. Tenemos que enseñar de manera diferente. Utilizamos libros de texto de alto nivel, con problemas que le pueden tomar días a nuestros estudiantes resolverlos. También utilizamos una gran cantidad de imágenes y modelos computarizados para prepararlos “, dice el Sr. Koski.
Continúa describiendo su método: “El cerebro es visual. Nuestros chicos están motivados porque descubren las matemáticas cuando las pueden “ver” con vida. Necesita saber cómo funcionan las cosas para entenderlas, no sólo memorizar fórmulas de un libro de texto. Cuando algo es difícil, lo construimos, queremos que visualicen. Cuando lo ven, pueden entender cómo funciona, pueden entender la ecuación, y eso es lo que hace la diferencia, es allí cuando las reglas matemáticas tienen sentido. Ellos empiezan a pensar en las posibilidades y tienen una potencia extra a partir de la imagen para discutir sus opciones y concluir cuál es la respuesta, una respuesta que no será mecánica”.
Las habilidades que estos jóvenes aprenden de estas técnicas los ayudan a competir con otros estudiantes teniendo una perspectiva diferente lo que se trata la prueba y su dificultad y esto hace que quieran trabajar aún más duro para alcanzar sus metas.
Doral Academy: Próximas Competencias
Los estudiantes del club se están preparando para su temporada oficial de competencia “Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society” que comienza ahora en enero de 2016. La temporada consta de seis competencias por todo el estado, cada dos semanas, que incluye la Convención de Estado en Orlando en abril, y la Convención Nacional en San Luis en julio. Además de los eventos “Mu Alpha Theta”, el equipo participará en variados concursos durante todo el año.
Este grupo se ha comprometido a seguir trabajando duro para mejorar sus habilidades y continuar triunfando en cada competencia. Ellos cuentan con todos los medios para continuar enorgulleciendo a esta comunidad como concluye el director Ferrals:
“Cuando se unen maestros talentosos, estudiantes altamente motivados y las herramientas adecuadas, se obtiene la fórmula para el éxito…es allí cuando el cielo es el límite. Me siento muy orgulloso y privilegiado de ser el director de una escuela tan sobresaliente”.
