The inauguration class for the Teaching Academy Program at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School (RRDSH) took place on August 25th, 2015, with the attendance of State, District and FIU authorities.

School Board Member Susie Castillo spearheaded the creation of this program, the second of its kind in MDCPS and the first in the west area of Miami. The presence of Ms. Castillo, along with State Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, MDCPS Central Region Superintendent Albert Payne, Florida International University (FIU) President Mark Rosemberg and the Dean of the College of Education at FIU Delia Garcia, emphasized the importance of the event, not only for Doral Public Schools but for the entire school district.

IMG_5370 copyAfter introducing the authorities to the audience, Principal Mr. Juan Carlos Silva said “The most important people in this room are the teacher Ms. Oliva and the students of the graduating class of 2019 of FIU-RRDSH Teaching Academy. I as a principal cherish this program and I am happy of nurturing them to be the teachers of tomorrow for our community.”

Mrs. Yelena Oliva, who received her Bachelors and Master degrees from FIU, will be the teacher in charge of conducting these selected students through their four year path, which will allow them to finish High School in 2019 with college credits and guaranteed admission to the Bachelor of Science in Education Program at Florida International University (FIU).

“I feel very honored and excited to teach this program” said Oliva, who requested to be part of the project. She explained that the program will be covered through elective courses the students will take over their four years of High School. The curriculum the first two years include two Honors level subjects where they will do “research programs on the different areas they are interested in teaching” in order to grow and nurture their pedagogic skills.

Starting the second year the collaboration with FIU’s College of Education will be introduced, through buddy program, teacher shadowing and dual enrollment on courses prerequisite for the School of Education, including Introduction to Education, Introduction to Technology and Teaching Diverse Populations.

Dream come true

“I want to thank Mr. Silva for working so hard to make this dream a reality” said Ms. Susie Castillo. “This is the first Teaching Academy created in collaboration with a State University.” She also thanked Dean Garcia and President Rosemberg for their support, and the students for deciding to join this very special program.

“I will be following you and visiting you quite often” she said to the students. “It is very important that our local teachers stay here; I like to see students from the school system that understand their community, go on to study at a local university and hopefully come back to work at MDCPS, where they will be able to give back so much more to their own community.”

State Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen commended Ms. Castillo for this initiative and inspiration to promote the creation of the program and also congratulated the school administration and students on their decision to join: “Susie has been an inspiration for all this, I am thrilled to be here and soaking all this incredible positive energy.”

Delia Garcia, Dean of FIU School of Education said that creating this program “started as a labor of love by Susie Castillo, This was her dream. I have a significant number of staff excited and wanting to take part of this program.”

Garcia noted the hard work RRDSH’s leadership team to consolidate the project, and Mrs. Oliva’s commitment to become the teacher for the program. She also congratulated the students for their involvement on the Teaching Academy: “You have chosen an incredible profession that can be very influential in a life of many people. We have great aspirations for you; you are now part of FIU College of Education and we will be doing extraordinary things together.”

Creating the future teachers of America

RRDSH was ranked among the best High Schools in the nation by US News and the addition of new programs continues to solidify that prestige; moreover when it is a partnership with a state university.

Dr. Albert Payne, Superintendent of the Central Region considers it is a tremendous honor to host the Teaching Academy at RRDSH, as the program provides “a farming system for our future teachers of America. Our teachers are going to be homegrown right here in central region through the FIU and RRDSH partnership. We truly need teachers because there is a shortage of teachers nationwide.”

Students that participate in the program requested to be registered on it during the articulation process with the feeder pattern middle schools. “It is a fantastic opportunity for them” said Mr. Israel Porras, Testing Chairperson at RRDSH who worked as liaison with FIU to make this academy a reality. “Between the facts that they get dual enrollment credits and what they are going to learn here it will make a difference in their future education.”

“The noblest of all endeavors”

“When people ask you what you teach, you tell them ‘I teach kids’. It is all about the kids” said Superintendent Carvalho to the students before the beginning of the ceremony.

During his speech, he commended all those who worked to make the program a reality, but most of all the students present: “The teachers of tomorrow are here today. Today is a proud moment, because you made a decision that is a noble decision. Teaching is the noblest of all endeavors. It is the one that touches all, from the very beginning to the end.”
