After an excellent, uninterrupted tenure, principal Gwendolyn C. Hines, has decided to retirefrom the field of education after 41 years of service to the school community.  Her last few years were dedicated to John I. Smith K-8 in Doral, directing the staff, its students, and the daily functions in elementary education.

Hines passes on her duties with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction from goals attained, as she opens the door for new ideas and a renewed purpose at this institution. She willingly cedes her position with the hope that her commitment to the children’s wellbeing, education and future will continue to flourish.

Taking her place, Doral and John I Smith K-8 Center now welcomes Principal Genaro Navarro.  Born in Cuba and residing in the US since he was three, he has been a part of the public education system from an early age. His 27-year career began as a part-time assistant and he credits public education for his upbringing, formation, and the attainment of his Bachelor’s Degree.

After working eight years as a teacher, Navarro was promoted to Assistant Principal and spent 6 years in Jose Marti Middle School.  He was then promoted once more to Principal of Kensington Park Elementary where he served for the last 12 years.

With all his experience in the system, he was hand picked for his merits in the previous organizations where he worked, to face a new challenge as Principal of John I Smith K-8 Center.

“I am proud to belong and be a product of Miami-Dade County Public Schools”, comments Principal Navarro.

Expectations for John I. Smith

The neighboring city of Miami Springs has been his home for the past 20 years and its proximity to Doral lends a sense of belonging and comfort.

“It is very positive.  I am honored to be the principal of John I Smith. It  has been an excellent school in the past few years”,  states Principal Navarro.

I am eager to work here, alongside the administration, teachers, students, and parents.” – he continues – “I am here to serve the community and do everything I can for the school to be the best it can possibly be, always keeping in mind that the students are most important”

“I am here to do what I can and need to do for their wellbeing.”

DFJ: – What are your short-term goals?

My initial goal is to meet the teachers and staff, although I already have a great impression of them as they have stopped by to welcome me and offer their help this summer.” he remarked.

But I want to get to know them well so we can work as a team to improve and define the needs of the John I. Smith community.

My main short-term goal is to work towards having the school ready for the upcoming school year. I want the school in the best condition possible to give our students a warm welcome.”

“Nothing is ever perfect, and we must always strive to make improvements. I want to work closely with the community, parents and the PTSA,” he concluded.

DFJ:- What are some areas of improvement for the school?

There is always room for improvement, but in the few days that I have been here I noticed technology as an area to improve. We want to have “promethean boards”  in all classrooms for teachers to use during instruction.  These new computers allow teachers to freeze the screen when they are explaining new concepts.  Likewise, the PTSA donated 40 new computers so I am grateful for the efforts already made.

DFJ: – What are the school’s plans for security, drug policies, and bullying which are some of the areas of most concern for parents?

“The safety of children depends on all of us that work at the school and the community of parents. The most important factor is to maintain ample visibility of all areas.  I always stress that security is achieved when every one is vigilant and we know the staff, the children, and their parents. It is everyone’s job. I have worked in public schools and I have always felt safe.  My daughters have attended public schools, and they have been safe.  This school will be no exception. But certainly it will depend on everyone’s attentiveness.”

DFJ: –How much work is involved in this position at a new school? …

” John I. Smith K-8 has a student body of approximately 1,350 students. Any type of work is a responsibility, even more so when it has to do with children… we work to educate and form them for their future,” assures the new Principal.

DFJ: – What would you like to tell Doral’s school community?

“I want the community to know that it is a great pleasure to be here for them, to serve and work with them”,  he emphasized.

“But we need the community to come together to have a great year. We need to work as one: parents, children, teachers, and the administration. We must work for what matters most: the students, and for them to have they best school that they can have.   John I. Smith is a great school and I want them to feel safe and happy. I want them to enjoy coming to school everyday.”

In a modest, professional and honest manner, the new Principal of John I. Smith K-8 has expressed his great willingness to work.  Genaro Navarro now opens a new chapter at the school, in the Doral community, and the future of the next student generations.

Genaro Navarro:

Nuevo Director de John I. Smith K-8 Center.

Expectativas para John I. Smith
