Help! How to unplug your teen from video screens and the Internet.

It seems that adolescence is extending at both ends: 10 year olds behave like 13 year olds, and many in their 20s seem to be 15. Summer presents a dilemma for parents of teens and tweens. Many are reluctant to go to camp as when they were younger. In addition there is the issue of sleep. During puberty there is a change in the biological clock and that is why in starting with puberty children sleep until later and function better in the afternoon and evening.
What can we do so that our children don’t spend their summer in front of a video screen, or on their cellphones, on Instagram, Reddit, or sending messages and photos on Snapchat? The best approach is to look for afternoon activities with a strong component of socialization. It is also important not to impose a strict regime to cover all summer, and to make them participate in the selection of activities.
With all this in mind, and the experience of years working with these children, we have designed a program of Mini Courses in PHOTOGRAPHY and COMIC and CARTOON. The MINI courses are 2 or 3 classes long, working as modules that can go filling the summer with fun and varied activities. We have even designed a course where teens and tweens learn to work on canvas by CUSTOMIZING A PAIR OF SHOES.
During the year we had great success with these courses. You can see the results in the photos created by our students. We also had the pleasure of having three of our Cartoon students – Brian Black, Galo Domaica and Sebastian Zambrano – selected to have a table for the cartoon and comic convention Mini-Coms. Domaica Galo said “My MiniCon experience was the bomb. I finally got to be with people of my kind. It was very nice and hilarious. My stand artwork got sufficient compliments. In the end, I only made one dollar and one Tumblr follower. But, hey, it’s a pretty fresh start for a 13-year-old.” Sebastian Zambrano added” I learnt how to set up a table and sell my art work… Everybody shared the same love for one thing, the love of art.”
We will also continue to offer our open art classes where teens can explore different media through open ended or semi open ended activities, always focusing on the creative process. The studio art space gives them an ideal environment for socializing with others their age, in a spirit of creativity and with their hands busy and away from the keyboard and video game consoles.

¡Auxilio! Cómo despegar a los hijos de los video juegos y el Internet

Parecería que la adolescencia esta extendiéndose en ambas direcciones: los de 10 años ya se comportan como los de 13, y muchos de 20 como de 15. El verano presenta un dilema para los padres de adolescentes y preadolescentes. Muchos se resisten a ir a campamento como cuando eran mas chicos. Además esta el tema del sueño. Durante la pubertad se produce un cambio en el reloj biológico y es por eso que en la adolescencia los hijos duermen hasta mas tarde y funcionan mejor en las horas de la tarde y noche.
Como hacer entonces para que nuestros hijos no pasen su verano frente a una pantalla de video juegos, o el celular, en Instaran, Reddit, o mandando mensajes y fotos en Snapchat? La mejor propuesta es buscar actividades en las tardes que tengan un fuerte componente de socialización. También es importante no imponer un régimen estricto que cubra todo el verano y hacerlos participar de la elección de las actividades.
Con todo esto en mente y la experiencia de años trabajando con estos niños, hemos diseñado un programa de Mini Cursos en FOTOGRAFIA y en CARTOON Y COMIC. Los MINI cursos son de 2 o 3 clases, módulos que pueden ir poblando el verano con actividades divertidas y variadas. Inclusive hemos diseñado in curso donde aprenden a trabajar sobre lienzo PERSONALIZANDO UN PAR DE ZAPATILLAS.
Durante el año tuvimos muchísimo éxito con estos cursos. Pueden ver los resultados en las fotos creadas por nuestro alumnos. También tuvimos el placer de que 3 de nuestros alumnos de Cartoon – Brian Black, Galo Domaica y Sebastián Zambrano – fueran seleccionados para tener una mesa durante la convención de cartoon y comic Mini-Coms. Galo Domaica nos dijo “Mi experiencia en Mini-Com fue una bomba! Finalmente pude estar con gente como yo. Fue muy agradable y divertido. Obtuve muchas felicitaciones por los trabajos que estaba exponiendo. Al final solo gane un dólar y un seguidor en mi pagina de Tumblr… pero hey, es un buen comienzo para un chico de solo 13 años.” Sebastian Zambrano agrego “ Aprendí como presentar una mes y vender mi arte… Todo el mundo allí compartía una misma pasión, la pasión por el arte.”
Además continuamos con clases de arte abiertas donde los adolescentes pueden explorar medios diferentes a través de consignas abiertas o semiabiertas, focalizándose siempre en el proceso creativo. El espacio de taller les da un ambiente ideal para la socialización con otros de su edad, en un espíritu de creatividad y con las manos lejos de los teclados y las consolas de videojuegos.
