Juan Carlos Silva, new principal at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School: Committed to maintaining educational excellence.

Mr. Juan Carlos Silva is a very approachable and amiable person. Born and raised in Miami to Cuban parents, he pursued a career in education that put him in the path that lead him to his recent appointment as Principal at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School.
He is replacing Dr. Jacques Bentolilla, who was promoted to an administrative position within the Central Region Office at Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Since receiving the call last June notifying him of this new position, Mr. Silva has been busy culminating the school year at his previous post as Principal of Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School, getting acquainted to his new surroundings, meeting his new staff and setting up RRDSH for 2013-2014 school year.
Mr. Silva shares here with the community his background, first impressions, goals, expectations and commitment to continue leading Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High School in the path of success.
“I am thrilled to be here”
His first impressions of his new post have been no less than excellent. “I am thrilled to be here. My first impression is how inviting it was. Not only from the staff, but the students; the children here were so well behaved, so educated.”
“I am of the belief that a truly well-rounded individual is one that has the best of everything, including a strong family upbringing. And you could tell that these kids, apart from the educational part that they have received through our school district, the way they were brought up at home is prevalent in how they communicate with me. They were very engaging, extremely respectful; welcoming me. It was a wonderful feeling; I was taken aback by it. The parents and the PTSA welcomed me with open arms. They were very receptive.”
After a long and successful career in Public Education within the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Mr. Silva has reached a pinnacle with this assignment as Principal of, in his own words, “one of the highest performing schools in the county.”
He started as an elementary teacher and taught in a classroom for about 10 years. After getting his Master Degrees in Computer Science and Education and in Leadership, he was assigned to his first administrative position as Assistant Principal. Silva continued escalating positions in several schools until becoming Principal at Jorge Mas Canosa Middle.
The experience on that position gave him the exposure to leading a school with a large population and to the Cambridge Program, which has been successfully implemented there as a Magnet School. “It is a similar to what we have here in RRDSH with the Cambridge Academy. It is a very rigorous program.”
“The goal should always be to continue the excellence”
Mr. Silva’s love for teaching and for encouraging the pursuit of excellence not only in students but in the whole school operation is evident in the way he interacts with parents, teachers, staff and students.
He is always present and available. He has made a personal commitment to get to know as many students as possible by first name, not an easy task in a school with a population of more than 2000 children.
On the first day of school he visited each and every classroom to introduce himself and to welcome students and teachers to the new school year; and in the first week he was in the cafeteria serving food and talking to the children during lunch time. It made a lasting impression on the students. It made them feel comfortable with the idea of approaching their principal whenever they need him in the future.
First and foremost Mr. Silva wants Reagan/Doral to continue with the high performing standards it has maintained in the previous years: “the goal should always be to continue that excellence. If there is one word that I can sum-up what I have already thought about Ronald Reagan/Doral is excellence. I think the long term goal is to preserve that and build on it. Students have to understand that whatever it is they are going to do here have to be done with excellence.”
“My goal as a High School Principal is to allow students to understand that they have an opportunity right now in their life to take control and make the impossible. They can change anything, they can do anything. My role as a leader of the school is to instill that in the students.”
“Also my goal as a principal is to support my staff, give them all the resources they need to succeed because if they are successful the students will be successful. “
“And my main goal is to be in that one on one relationship with as many students and as many families as I can.”
Encouraging strict discipline and Zero Tolerance to disruptions
He has full knowledge of the allegations made against RRDSH concerning conduct and rule enforcement and “[He doesn’t] think we have any issues. If there have been issues in the past they have been blown out of proportion. If there is any issue here you need to take a look at your own back yard. We are a product of our families, of our community and we have an excellent community, and excellent group of parents and an excellent group of students. Anything else is just hot air, is perception, it is made believe, honestly.”
“We all make mistakes it is how we handle them what makes a difference. Here we have No Tolerance for any type of issues that cause disruption to the learning environment.”
“There are things that are handled in house; it is School Board rules, and if things that happen at the school are breaking of the law, when that happen the police get involved. We are not going to cover anything.”
He is totally open to give parents all information they would request. “Parents can come and talk to me. We will be more than happy to address any concern they might have. My expectation is that they all have positive experiences. No parent will ever leave this school questioning whether what we have done is not in the best interest of their child.”
Educating High School students to handle independence responsibly
Parental and family involvement is very important for Mr. Silva. His family supports him in his job and get involved as well. His wife and two of his daughters were present at the Back to School BBQ in August 17th, mingling with the rest of the Bison Family that made this year’s event a great success.
However, Mr. Silva is very aware of the role High School has on preparing students for their college years. “At this age they need a little bit of independence”.
“It is a fine line, because we have families that care, families that want to be involved. There has to be times when I will say to them ‘Mom, Dad, hold up, let’s work with them’. I think at the end of the day they understand that is in the best interest of their son or daughter. They need that independence; they are off to college when they leave us.”
He is very proud to see there are Bison Alumni attending college all over the country, including Ivy Leagues. “We are only missing Harvard, but that will happen under my watch!” he affirms with a smile.
“These kids have the capacity and the capability of doing whatever they want. And we as adults most give them the opportunity and also give support to their families.”
He is committed to helping the community get involved with the school and to help recently arrived families getting used to American culture, methods, systems and traditions. Silva believes it is just a matter of time before all the community realizes RRDSH is the most academically highly achieving high school in Doral and takes the advantage of giving their children the best education and opportunities possible by having them attend school here.
“It is important for parents to understand that in any school you go, private, charter or public, things happen. That is society. We are a reflection of our community. If there is something that we don’t like that is happening in our school, as a united front we need to work together to make those things better.”
With the involvement of local businesses and their support as partners for RRDSH Mr. Silva expects to help the community embrace and adopt their public high school and make it become the vibrant heart and soul of Doral. “I have reached out already a lot to the community. As a school we have the duty to assist the community, to assist the businesses it is a partnership. My goal is to work with those businesses too.”
“We all have cultural differences but what makes us special in this country is how we have been able to combine all those differences of cultures and experiences and make a city like no other, a district like no other and schools like no others. Just because things are not the way they were in our home country, doesn’t mean they are not right or they are not good. Sometimes they are better; the end result is going to be even better when it happens, because we are here for a reason, no matter what brought us here. In order to provide our children with the opportunity to have the most incredible future, we have to provide them the best academic and social support they are going to get. I know that is happening at RRDSH every day. “
Education is an art and, as one teacher said to his students after Silva visited their classroom, Mr. Juan Carlos Silva believes in Education as an Art rather than as a Science; and that is how RRDSH is going to continue to flourish under his leadership.

Comprometido con mantener la excelencia educativa
El Sr. Juan Carlos Silva es una persona muy amable y accesible. Nacido y criado en Miami, de origen cubano, ha tenido una exitosa carrera en Educación Pública que le ha llevado a su reciente nombramiento como Director de la Escuela Secundaria Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School.
Reemplaza en el cargo al Dr. Jacques Bentolilla, quien fue promovido a una posición administrativa en la Oficina Regional Central del Sistema de Escuelas Públicas del Condado Miami-Dade.
Una vez notificado de su nombramiento, el Sr. Silva estuvo desde el mes de Junio ocupado culminando sus actividades como Director de la Escuela Intermedia Jorge Mas Canosa y conociendo su nuevo equipo de trabajo para poner a punto el arranque del nuevo año escolar 2013-2014 en RRDSH.
En esta entrevista el Sr. Silva comparte con la comunidad sus primeras impresiones, metas, expectativas y su compromiso de continuar llevando el liderazgo de RRDSH por el camino del éxito.
“Muy emocionado de estar aquí”
Ha tenido una primera impresión excelente de la escuela y sus miembros. “Estoy muy emocionado de estar aquí. Me ha impresionado mucho lo receptivos que han sido, no solamente los maestros, administradores y equipo de trabajo sino los estudiantes. Los jóvenes aquí son sumamente bien portados y bien educados”.
“Siempre he pensado que un individuo integral tiene lo mejor en todos los aspectos, sobre todo solidos principios familiares. Puedo afirmar con propiedad que estos muchachos, además de tener un nivel académico extraordinario, producto en su mayoría de nuestro sistema escolar público, han sido muy bien criados en sus hogares. Es evidente en su manera de comunicarse conmigo. Son amables y respetuosos. Me han dado una muy cordial bienvenida y estoy muy agradecido por ello. Los padres y el PTSA me han recibido con los brazos abiertos. Todos han sido muy receptivos conmigo.”
El nombramiento del Sr. Silva como Director de RRDSH es un hito cumbre en su exitosa carrera como educador y administrador dentro de MDCPS. En sus propias palabras, Reagan Senior es “una de las escuelas con mejor desempeño académico de todo el Condado.”
Silva comenzó su carrera como maestro de primaria y enseñó diferentes niveles durante más de 10 años. Una vez obtenidos sus Master en Computación aplicada a la Educación y en Liderazgo, recibió su primera asignación como Sub-Director y continuó escalando posiciones en diferentes escuelas K-8 e intermedias hasta llegar a Director de la Escuela Intermedia Jorge Mas Canosa.
Allí adquirió experiencia en el liderazgo de escuelas con gran población estudiantil y en la administración del Programa Cambridge, que ha sido implantado en la Escuela Mas Canosa en la modalidad de Magnet School. “Es similar a lo que tenemos aquí en Reagan con el Cambridge Academy. Es un programa muy riguroso”.
“El objetivo es continuar con la excelencia”
El amor por la enseñanza y la búsqueda de la excelencia son los motores que mueven al Sr. Silva y que se hacen evidentes en la manera como interactúa con los estudiantes, padres, maestros y empleados. Siempre está presente y disponible para atenderlos. Ha convertido en un reto personal conocer el nombre de todos y cada uno de sus estudiantes, una tarea titánica en una escuela de más de 2000 alumnos. Sin embargo él está seguro de lograrlo.
Dejó un recuerdo imborrable en los estudiantes al visitar cada aula el primer día de clases para presentarse, saludar a los maestros y ponerse a la orden. Y durante la primera semana de clase pudo vérsele en la cafetería sirviéndoles el almuerzo y conversando con los alumnos. Esto les hizo sentirse confortables y confiados para abrir los canales de comunicación con el Director Silva.
El objetivo principal del Sr. Silva es lograr que RRDSH siga siendo una escuela con altísimos estándares de desempeño como ha sido desde el comienzo. “El objetivo es continuar con la excelencia. Esa es la palabra que me viene a la mente para describir lo que he visto en Reagan desde mi llegada. Todos están enfocados en la excelencia y debemos seguir así y capitalizar en esos resultados para seguir creciendo y mejorando. Los estudiantes deben comprender que en todo lo que emprendan deben estar siempre en la búsqueda de la excelencia”.
“Quiero que los estudiantes comprendan que tienen una oportunidad de oro aquí para tomar control de sus vidas y hacer posible lo imposible. Ellos tienen la capacidad de cambiar el mundo, el potencial de hacer todo sueño realidad. Mi rol como líder y mi meta como Director de la Secundaria es sembrar en mis estudiantes ese constante deseo de trabajar duro y con excelencia para lograr hacer realidad sus metas y deseos”.
“Por supuesto, también mi meta es apoyar a los maestros, proporcionarles todos los recursos necesarios en la medida de lo posible para que sean exitosos en su misión de enseñar; porque si ellos son exitosos los estudiantes también lo serán”.
“Sin embargo, mi objetivo primordial es lograr establecer una relación estrecha con todos los estudiantes y con todas las familias que conforman la escuela.”
Disciplina estricta y Cero Tolerancia al mal comportamiento
El Sr. Silva está muy bien informado sobre las denuncias que en el pasado se hicieron sobre fallas en la disciplina y seguridad en la escuela y en su opinión piensa que “en Reagan no tenemos ningún tipo de problema. Y si hubo alguno en el pasado, sinceramente pienso que fue exagerado. Cuando hay problemas en las escuelas hay que mirar primero la comunidad. Los estudiantes son producto de las familias y de la comunidad y Doral es una excelente comunidad, con maravillosos padres y un extraordinario grupo de estudiantes. En mi honesta opinión pienso que decir algo diferente es una percepción exagerada.”
“Todos podemos cometer errores y como los manejemos es lo que hace la diferencia. Aquí tendremos CERO TOLERANCIA a cualquier tipo de circunstancia que perturbe el ambiente de aprendizaje. Habrá situaciones que tengamos que manejar en casa, de acuerdo a las reglas del School Board, pero les aseguro que si lo que suceda va en contra de la ley, enseguida llamaremos a la policía. Ese es el procedimiento. No vamos a tolerar ninguna desviación”.
El Sr. Silva está dispuesto a responder cualquier tipo de duda, pregunta o consulta de los padres. “Pueden venir y conversar conmigo. Con mucho gusto les atenderemos y ayudaremos a resolver sus dudas o preocupaciones. Es mi deseo que en la escuela solamente haya experiencias positivas para los estudiantes y sus familias y que ningún padre salga nunca de la escuela pensando que hemos tomado una acción que no sea por el bien de sus hijos y su educación.”
Enseñando a los estudiantes a ser responsables e independientes
La presencia de las familias y su participación activa es un valor fundamental para el Sr. Silva. Sin embargo, está muy consciente que, aun cuando las familias estén muy involucradas con sus hijos, uno de los roles de la Secundaria es preparar a los estudiantes para los retos que les vendrán en la Universidad. “A esta edad los muchachos necesitan ir poco a poco teniendo independencia.”
“Es muy delicado, porque tenemos familias que realmente están muy pendientes de sus hijos, pero habrá momentos en que tendremos que decirles ‘déjalo que el mismo resuelva, déjanos trabajar con el’. Creo que al final comprenderán que es el futuro de sus hijos lo que está en juego y que es mejor que ellos aprendan a ser independientes en un ambiente controlado para poder desempeñarse bien cuando se vayan solos a la universidad”.
Silva está muy orgulloso de saber que hay egresados de Reagan en las mejores universidades del país, incluyendo las Ivy League. “Solamente nos falta Harvard, pero les aseguro que lo lograremos”, afirma con una sonrisa.
“Estos muchachos tienen la capacidad y el potencial de llegar a donde quieran. Y es nuestra responsabilidad como adultos guiarles y darles las mejores oportunidades y apoyar a sus familias”.
Está comprometido con ayudar a que la comunidad se involucre con la escuela y a apoyar a familias que estén recién llegadas a los EEUU para adaptarse y comprender los métodos, programas y tradiciones de la cultura educativa Americana. Silva piensa que es cuestión de tiempo para que la comunidad de Doral se dé cuenta que RRDSH es LA SECUNDARIA CON MEJORES PROGRAMAS, OPCIONES Y LOGROS ACADEMICOS de toda la ciudad y decida aprovechar las ventajas de tener a sus hijos como alumnos en Reagan, para proporcionarles las mejores oportunidades educativas posibles.
También el Sr. Silva desea lograr la participación de los negocios locales apoyando la escuela y que la comunidad se sienta miembro fundamental de la Única Escuela Secundaria Publica, que la ‘adopte’ y la convierta en el alma y corazón de la ciudad.
“Las diferencias culturales son lo que hacen especial a este país y la manera en que hemos combinado estas culturas es lo que hace Doral una ciudad diferente y a las escuelas de Miami-Dade únicas. El hecho que las cosas se hagan diferente a nuestros países de origen no las hace malas o buenas. Solamente diferentes. Y muchas veces los resultados resultan ser extraordinarios. Estamos aquí para dar a nuestros hijos las mejores oportunidades para construir un futuro increíble, con los mejores recursos académicos y el mejor entorno social y de seguridad. Y ese es el día a día en RRDSH”, concluyó Silva.
En palabras de uno de los maestros de RRDSH: “El Sr. Juan Carlos Silva considera educar un arte, no una ciencia y por ello pienso que RRDSH va a continuar prosperando exitosamente bajo con su liderazgo”.
