The Ojeda, Rubio and Nunez Families

December is one of the most anticipated months of the year. With joy and enthusiasm characteristic of this time, many people are getting ready to share family traditions, observe religious holidays, listen to good music, prepare meals, decorate their houses with lights and color, buy gifts or go on vacation. For others, however, it is a month of nostalgia remembering the past or missing the loved ones who are not at home at this time.
Although the days seem to pass quickly with all the preparations creating anxiety or distress everywhere, it is important to remember that a happy attitude is essential for enjoying the season with peace and quietness. This is especially true for the Ojeda, Nunez and Rubio Families, all Doral residents, who fully live this time with their families, friends and community by maintaining and sharing their own traditions.
The Ojeda Family: “Christmas: A time for Love and Family Union”
The Ojeda couple are from Peru and since arriving to the United States on December 24th over 20 years ago with their daughter, celebrating Christmas has been a very important tradition. Coming from a large family in their homeland, the Ojeda’s family house was filled with guests of all ages. The memories of those Christmas celebrations are full of children laughing, family members singing religious songs together in front of the image of the Child Jesus, listening traditional music, creating a lot of fun, delicious food and gifts for all. “Beautiful moments,” as Ms. Ojeda says.
The second December they spent in the States was very meaningful to this family. At that time, they bought a large Christmas tree that is still preserved and decorated with care every year. It was also the first time they receive a couple of “porcelain houses” as a gift from some co-workers. They hadn’t seen those houses before but they immediately felt so passionate about them that it was the beginning of their “Traditional Winter Village” which is now the central piece of decoration under their tree. Their Winter Village is so carefully done that it is the envy of those displayed in the local malls because of its color, size, lights, sound and movement.
Christmas preparation duties in the Ojeda’s house have their well-defined owners. Mr. Ojeda is responsible for assembling the Village which gives a touch of the American home environment to his house, while Ms. Ojeda is responsible for the interior and exterior decorations. With her artistic hands, she makes spectacular floral arrangements that create the ideal spirit of love that they broadcast in their smile, humor and fluent speech.
After several encounters with serious illnesses, they take the value of family union very seriously and therefore fully enjoy this time of year. Despite living away from their daughter, son-in law and grandchildren, the Ojeda couple are always looking for ways to gather together with family and friends to share their traditions, knowing that it is not just about exterior decoration, but that it should come from the heart, as they explain: “Christmas is the most beautiful time of the year, a time that talks about love. A time when we stop to think of others, apologize for any mistakes and make peace with those we are upset with because this life is very short and we are passing through it fast. We should enjoy all moments to the fullest. “
The Nunez Family: Living the Faith by the Birth of Jesus
The celebration of Christmas in the Nunez family’s house is anticipated by its family members and friends with great enthusiasm. Being Colombian and Venezuelan, their countries of origin, Alejandra and Atilio have consolidated their own traditions so harmoniously that it is easy to spread the light of joy, love and unity that characterizes them to the heart of those who know them.
As active members of the Catholic faith, the center of their celebration is the birth of the Child Jesus. With that in mind, they build a beautiful Nativity Scene made in a ??large scale with great dedication, creativity and attention to detail that they have refined over the years. They work together as a family to create a beautiful small town and they all enjoy getting involved. “Many of the little houses and scenes in the Manger are made by us. Every year we apply different techniques we learn from simple courses that we find in books or the Internet,” says Alejandra. Their tradition is so well known among their friends, that regardless of origin or religion, many collect images and decorations or provide ideas that can be used for the next Nativity Scene so it can be even more fabulous.
The most interesting part of this Nativity Scene is that every corner of it is a replica of the different stages in the history of the life of Jesus from the Biblical point of view. Everyone who visits this home can listen to a recording of a very realistic story that guides the visitor on a virtual tour through the different scenarios, from the Angel’s visit to announce the coming of the child Jesus until his birth in the Manger. “We are pleased that all our friends can enjoy and share this with us. From our son’s teenager friends to people our age, all expect this time of the year and we are happy to share our faith with them,” adds Alejandra.
The Nunez couple, along with their son and grandmother also incorporate features of American culture. Each year they invite their relatives and friends to the “Christmas Novena”, an occasion of singing and praying in front of their Nativity Scene and they end these gatherings by sharing delicious dishes from different countries. For this family, Christmas is a time of hope and understanding among all regardless of age or cultural differences. Although their lives are busy, they take the time to promote “family love, faith and joy” keeping and teaching its principles and beliefs as they see it as an important legacy for future generations.
The Rubio Family: Expressing and Sharing the Joy to All
Just to step inside the Rubio family’s house is enough to feel their excitement and joy. For Gustavo, Mariluz and their three children who came from Venezuela, Christmas is the time of year where the main “goal is to smile, filling the hearts of joy and enjoy sharing with others the life we have.” With Spanish roots, the Rubio family has been accustomed to move and all adaptations which that implies. Therefore, as a way to maintain their identity and comfort zone in the midst of all the changes, they take their suitcase full of traditions wherever they go.
Since moving to the United States just over 10 years ago, they have been known in their neighborhood for their varied and original exterior decorations, masterpieces of Aunt Betty, who dedicates time to “dress the house” according to the season or holidays of the year. Each decoration is always different and full of originality, color, light and brightness, and are always admired by whoever walks nearby. The interiors are not far behind where Mariluz is designated to carry out the ideas of all family members but always maintaining the focus on the reason for the celebration, the birth of Jesus, making a large Manger and illuminating their home with a Christmas tree of about 11 feet tall.
For the Rubio Family, Christmas is not just an occasion for external appearances but an important time for family reunion, happiness and faith as Mariluz explains, “As Catholics we expect Christmas by observing Advent, and then we continue the celebration until the Epiphany, living each day from the hearts. We have a Christmas dinner together, and we keep the formality of tradition, with the typical foods, gifts, and so on, but most of all, we try to do as one of children says: the true joy of celebrating Christmas is being at home.”
Expressing the joy of Christmas for the Rubio Family also means taking action, such as sharing with people in need. Through a non-profit organization they opened as an initiative from their youngest daughter Ariana Rubio, they collect between 400 to 500 new toys annually and those toys are then sent to Maracaibo in Venezuela, which are then distributed by the local church. They also gather school supplies and uniforms during the back-to-school season for those children.
These families are an example of unity and necessary values to practice and care. They highlight the importance of taking the opportunity to share with family despite hard times or distances while maintaining their identity and warmth. With the same spirit, let this Christmas be filled with joy, happiness and good intentions for all the families of the City of Doral.
Compartiendo la Alegría de la Navidad.
Familias Ojeda, Núñez y Rubio

Diciembre es uno de los meses más esperados del año. Con la alegría y entusiasmo característicos de la época, muchos se preparan para compartir en familia, observar festividades religiosas, escuchar buena música, preparar comidas tradicionales, decorar casas con luces y colorido, comprar regalos y vacaciones. Para otros, sin embargo, es un mes de nostalgia, de recordar tiempos pasados, añorar los seres queridos que no siempre están en el hogar, un tiempo que viene que un agridulce sabor, no tanto en la boca como en el corazón.
A pesar que los días parecen escapar como viento y los preparativos de todas las celebraciones puedan crear inquietud o apuros por doquier, no debe perderse la felicidad esencial que permite disfrutar de este mes con calma y paz. Esto es especialmente cierto para las familias Ojeda, Núñez y Rubio, residentes de del Doral quienes viven a plenitud este tiempo con sus familias, amigos y comunidad por medio de mantener y compartir sus tradiciones.
Familia Ojeda: Tiempo de Amor y Unión Familiar
Los esposos Ojeda son originarios de Perú y desde que llegaron a los Estados Unidos justamente un 24 de diciembre hace más de 20 años junto a su hija, celebrar la Navidad ha sido una tradición muy importante. Provenientes de una familia numerosa en su tierra natal, la casa de la familia Ojeda había estado llena de invitados de todas las edades. Los recuerdos de aquellas navidades están cargados de la alegría de los pequeños, compartir entre todos los cantos religiosos en frente a la imagen del Niño Jesús, música, diversión, comidas y regalos, “bellos momentos” como dice la Sra. Ojeda.
Su segundo diciembre en Estados Unidos fue muy significativo para esta familia. En ese momento compraron un gran árbol que aún conservan y adornan con esmero y les obsequiaron unas “casas de porcelana” que hasta ese momento no habían visto, pero que de inmediato los apasionó y dieron origen a lo que hoy día es la “Tradicional Villa de Invierno” que adorna el pie de su árbol cada año y la cual nada tiene que envidiar a las exhibidas en los centros comerciales locales por su colorido, tamaño, luces, sonido y movimiento.
Los preparativos de Navidad en la casa de los Ojeda tienen sus asignaciones bien definidas. El Señor Ojeda es el responsable de ensamblar la Villa que regala ese toque de ambiente americano a su hogar, mientras que la Sra. Ojeda es la encargada de la decoración interior y exterior. Con sus manos artísticas hace hermosos arreglos florales que crean el ambiente idóneo para a vivir el espíritu de amor que transmiten en su sonrisa, su humor y su fluido hablar.
Luego de varios encuentros con enfermedades serias, valoran aún más la importancia de disfrutar en familia esta época del año. A pesar de vivir apartados de su hija, su yerno y sus nietos, buscan la forma de reunirse con familiares y amigos para compartir sus tradiciones, pues saben que no es solo decoración exterior, sino del corazón, como ellos explican: “La Navidad es la época más linda del año, un tiempo que nos habla de amor, en el cual nos detenemos a pensar en los demás, pedir disculpas y hacer las paces con quienes estemos molestos pues esta vida es muy corta y estamos de paso, debemos disfrutar todos los instantes a plenitud”.
Familia Núñez: Vivir la Fe por el Nacimiento del Niño Jesús
La celebración de la Navidad en casa de la familia Núñez es esperada por sus familiares y amigos con gran entusiasmo. Teniendo a Colombia y Venezuela como cuna, los esposos Alejandra y Atilio han logrado consolidar armoniosamente sus tradiciones de origen para contagiar en el corazón de quienes los conocen, la luz de la alegría, amor y unión que los caracteriza.
Siendo practicantes de la religión católica, el centro de su celebración es el Nacimiento del Nino Jesús y con eso en mente, construyen un hermoso Pesebre de gran tamaño hecho con mucha dedicación, creatividad y atención a los detalles que han logrado refinar con el paso de los años. El trabajo es compartido y todos disfrutan de participar. “Muchas de las casas y ambientes del Pesebre son hechos por nosotros mismos. Todos los años usamos técnicas distintas que aprendemos de pequeños cursos que encontramos en libros o internet” comenta Alejandra. Su tradición es tan conocida entre sus amistades, que sin considerar origen o religión, muchos aportan imágenes, adornos e ideas que puedan usarse para que el siguiente pesebre sea aún más fabuloso.
Lo más peculiar de este Pesebre es que cada rincón escenifica una etapa en la historia de la vida de Jesús desde el punto de vista bíblico y todos los que visitan este hogar se llevan ese conocimiento cuando escuchan la grabación, un relato pausando y muy realista que los va guiando en un recorrido por los diferentes escenarios, desde la visita del ángel para anunciar la venida del Niño, hasta su nacimiento en el establo. “Nos da gusto que, desde los jóvenes amigos de nuestro hijo hasta las amistades de nuestra edad, todos esperen y disfruten este Pesebre pues así compartimos nuestra fe con ellos”, añade Alejandra.
Los Núñez, junto a su hijo y la abuelita también incorporan rasgos de la cultura americana con una pequeña Villa. Cada año invitan a sus allegados a la “Novena de Navidad”, una ocasión de canto y oración en frente al Pesebre en donde además comparten deliciosos platos típicos de diferentes países. Para esta familia, la Navidad es un tiempo de esperanza y comprensión entre todos sin importar edad o diferencias culturales. A pesar que sus vidas son muy ocupadas, toman tiempo para fomentar el “amor familiar, la fe y la alegría entre todos” manteniendo y enseñando sus principios y creencias pues lo ven como un legado importante para las generaciones futuras.
Familia Rubio: Expresar y Compartir la Alegría con Todos
Tan solo pisar la casa de la familia Rubio basta para sentir entusiasmo y alegría. Para los esposos Mariluz y Gustavo, padres de tres hijos y provenientes de Venezuela, la Navidad representa el momento del año en que la “meta es sonreír, llenar los corazones de gozo y disfrutar compartiendo con otros la vida que tenemos”. Con raíces españolas, la familia Rubio ha estado acostumbrada a mudanzas y las adaptaciones que ello implica. Por eso, como una forma de mantener su identidad y consolar la melancolía de los cambios, llevan su maleta de tradiciones por dondequiera que van.
Desde que viven en los Estados Unidos, hace poco más de 10 años, se han dado a conocer en su vecindario por sus variadas y originales decoraciones exteriores, piezas maestra de la tía Betty, que van acorde a la temporada o celebración del año, todas cargadas originalidad, colorido, luz y brillo, que han sido motivo de gran admiración. Los interiores tampoco se quedan atrás, Mariluz es la designada a llevar a cabo las ideas de todos los miembros de la familia siempre manteniendo como centro el motivo principal de la celebración, el Nacimiento de Jesús, armando un pesebre de gran tamaño e iluminando su casa con un árbol de Navidad de 11 pies de alto.
Para los Rubio, la Navidad no se basa solo en el aspecto físico, para ellos es un tiempo importante de reunión familiar, felicidad y fe, como explica Mariluz: “Somos Católicos practicantes y como tal esperamos la Navidad desde el Adviento y lo celebramos hasta día de Reyes, viviendo cada una de las etapas. Tenemos una cena de Navidad juntos, mantenemos la formalidad que llevamos de tradición, con las comidas típicas de la época, los regalos, en fin, como dice uno de mis hijos, las Navidades alegres son en nuestra casa”.
Expresar esa alegría de Navidad, para los Rubio es también sinónimo de acción, es decir, compartir con los más necesitados. A través de una fundación que abrieron por iniciativa de la hija menor Ariana Rubio, se colectan anualmente entre 400 a 500 juguetes nuevos que son enviados a la ciudad de Maracaibo en Venezuela. Por esta institución sin fines de lucro también reúnen y envían uniformes y útiles durante la temporada escolar los cuales son distribuidos localmente por la iglesia local.
Estas familias son un ejemplo de unión y valores que se deben cultivar y cuidar. Ellos resaltan la importancia de aprovechar la oportunidad de compartir en familia a pesar de las distancias o momentos duros siempre manteniendo su identidad y calor humano.
Y con ese mismo espíritu, que estas Navidades estén llenas de alegría, buenas intenciones y felicidad para las familias de la Ciudad del Doral.
