Pitbull launched coding competition for startups

The fifth edition of eMerge Americas wrapped up in Miami Beach on April 24thand it is still making waves, as Armando Christian Perez “Pitbull” announced his sponsorship for a month-long coding competition at the end of the conference; the objective of the competition is to foster the development of apps that support the processes of the music industry.
Founded in 2014 by Manny Medina, entrepreneur in the IT infrastructure and cybersecurity industry, eMerge Americas has evolved to become a worldwide reference event about technology and innovation.
The event is divided into six tracks of conferences and experiences: eMerge Stage, where industry experts present the latest technologies in the market; eGOV or Government Innovation Summit, where government officials and business leaders present the transformative effects that technology has created in their communities; WIT or Women, Innovation and Technology is the stage where expert women leaders from the technology businesses showcase their innovations; Launchpad is where innovators introduce their ideas and inventions and also listen to investors interested in the future of technology; Texpert is where attendees learn from industry experts about best practices on latest technologies through highly interactive presentations.
The last stage in the event is the Startup Showcase. It is the golden opportunity for emerging entrepreneurs from around the world to pitch their ideas and products to potential partners and investors, while competing for prizes. This stage is the heart and soul of the event, where the most incredible ideas have been presented and launched over the years, gaining the support for reaching their next level. This year the focus of many of those initiatives was based on Blockchain technology.
Among the speakers in this edition of eMerge Americas were former Mexico’s President Vicente Fox, U.S. Representative Carlos Curbelo, University of Miami President Julio Frenk and Dr. Dennis Hong, Leader of the Robotics and Mechanisms Lab (RoMeLa) at UCLA, who presented the advancements in artificial intelligence technology that has been achieved at his center.
A shift in focus for Doral at eMerge Americas
The City of Doral had a very active participation on past editions of eMerge Americas, due to the launching and expansion of the Smart City initiative that started in 2015. On that year the City had a booth in the exhibitor’s room and in 2016 the City of Doral Information Technology Director Gladys Gonzalez was invited to present the results of the implementation of the Smart City strategy. This year, although staff from the city attended the event, the focus has shifted to consolidating strategic connections that have been created in previous editions.
Manuel Pila, City of Doral’s Economic Developer, said that they “did attend eMerge this year and connected with technology companies in the areas of transportation, smart parking, entrepreneurial education and cybersecurity. It was great to speak to young entrepreneurs and exchange information.”
“I think it’s a great event for South Florida and I always look forward to making connections and learning about all the new startups and technological advancements.” Pila explained that during the event they had the chance to meet with regional and international institutions interested in partnering with local universities.
“It’s interesting how much Doral has changed in the few years since we first participated in eMerge […] that really helped spread the word that Doral is serious about its Smart City process and that it’s a great place for tech companies. The city has continued to invest in Smart City technology and was recognized internationally for its efforts when we received our Smart City platinum certification from the World Council of City Data last November. That is very important, because it puts us on the same map as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Boston and Dubai, and allows us to promote that fact to companies of the caliber of Amazon, for example.”
Pila considers that the City of Doral has matured in the technology sector, increasing the international attention. His observations were corroborated on the FIU Economic Study received in November that showed the growth of the advanced industries in Doral. “We now have excellent third-party corroboration that technology is playing a major role in our growth, and that is very exciting. Now we are shifting our focus to telling that story” concluded Pila.

La quinta edición de eMerge Américas culminó el 24 de Abril en Miami Beach, pero aún dará que hablar, pues Armando Christian Pérez, mas conocido como “Pitbull” anunció, el último día de la conferencia, su patrocinio para una competencia de un mes para desarrollo de aplicaciones de apoyo a la industria musical, utilizando Tecnología de Bloques.
eMerge Américas fue fundada en 2014 por Manny Medina, empresario de las industrias de infraestructura de IT y CyberSeguridad. Desde entonces ha evolucionado hasta convertirse en un evento de referencia mundial para la tecnología y la innovación.
El evento se divide en seis grupos de conferencias o experiencias: eMerge Stage, donde los expertos presentan las más nuevas tecnologías del Mercado; eGOV o Conferencia de Innovación en el Gobierno, donde oficiales gubernamentales y líderes de negocio presentan los efectos transformativos de la tecnología en las comunidades; WIT o “Women, Innovation and Technology
(Mujeres, Innovación y Tecnología) es el espacio donde mujeres líderes en empresas de tecnología muestran sus innovaciones; Launchpad es el lugar donde los empresarios innovadores presentan sus ideas e invenciones a inversionistas interesados en apoyar el futuro de la tecnología; en Texpert los presentes aprenden de los expertos de la industria las mejores prácticas en tecnología de punta a través de presentaciones altamente interactivas.
El principal espacio del evento es el “Startup Showcase”, la oportunidad de oro para que los empresarios emergentes presenten sus ideas y productos a los potenciales socios o inversionistas, mientras compiten por premios. Este es el centro del evento, donde a lo largo de los años se han presentado las más increíbles ideas que han ganado el apoyo para progresar hasta el siguiente nivel. La mayoría de las iniciativas presentadas este año se basaban en Tecnología de Bloques.
Entre los invitados a presentar en esta edición de eMerge Américas se encontraron Vicente Fox, ex-presidente de México, Carlos Curbelo, Representante al Congreso, Julio Frenk, presidente de Universidad de Miami y Dr. Dennis Hong, líder del laboratorio de Robótica y Mecánica (RoMeLa) de UCLA, quien hizo una demostración de los avances que su centro ha alcanzado en inteligencia artificial.
Doral cambia su foco frente a eMerge Americas
En ediciones pasadas de eMerge Americas, la Ciudad de Doral tuvo una participación muy activa, por el lanzamiento y expansión de la iniciativa de Ciudad Inteligente, que comenzó en 2015. Durante ese año la Ciudad participó como expositor y al año siguiente la Directora de Tecnología de Información Gladys González fue invitada a presentar los resultados de la estrategia en un panel. Sin embargo para el 2018, aunque asistieron al evento, los representantes de la ciudad se enfocaron en consolidar conexiones estratégicas creadas en años anteriores.
Manuel Pila, Desarrollador Económico de la Ciudad, explicó que en este año pudieron “interactuar con compañías de tecnología en el área de transporte, estacionamientos inteligentes, educación empresarial y CyberSeguridad. Fue excelente conversar con jóvenes empresarios e intercambiar información.”
“Pienso que es un gran evento para el Sur de Florida, y siempre espero crear nuevas conexiones y aprender sobre las innovaciones y avances tecnologicos.” Pila explicó que durante el evento pudo tambien conocer instituciones regionales e internacionales interesadas en establecer alianzas con universidades locales.
“Es muy interesante ver cómo ha cambiado Doral desde nuestra primera participación en eMerge. Esto ha permitido dar a conocer como Doral trabaja seriamente en el proyecto de Ciudad Inteligente y es un excelente lugar para empresas de tecnología. La ciudad ha seguido invirtiendo es este tipo de tecnologías y ha recibido reconocimiento internacional por sus esfuerzos, como por ejemplo la certificación Smart City Platinum recibida en Noviembre, que nos pone en el mismo mapa que Amsterdam, Barcelona, Boston y Dubai, y nos ayuda a promovernos para compañías como Amazon, por ejemplo.”
Pila considera que la Ciudad de Doral ha madurado en la tecnología, incrementando la atención internacional. Sus observaciones fueron corroboradas en el Estudio Económico de FIU recibido en Noviembre, que reflejó como la tecnología ha jugado un rol importante en el crecimiento de la ciudad. “Ahora cambiaremos nuestro enfoque hacia contar la historia del éxito obtenido” concluyó Pila.
