The Girl Scout Organization’s Mission is “to builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place”, and that is exactly what Carolina Barilari and Sofia Florez have done for their School during this summer.

For their Silver Award, the second most important national recognition in Girl Scouting, Sofia and Carolina decided to create an Inspirational Mural at Doral Academy Preparatory School. They are convinced that “words have a special power to affect young people and their decisions, and that positive words can lead people to doing positive things”, that’s why the theme of the Mural is: “Inspirational and Positive Thoughts”.

As these two freshman high school students and 5 year Girl Scouts explain, the purpose of the wall is “to encourage youth to work hard to reach their goals and strive for the best”.

Sofia and Carolina, as many youth their age, enjoy reading books, watching movies, being involved in sports and hanging out with friends. But one of their favorite things to do is being girl scouts because, as they shared, it allows them to participate in different educational and recreational activities in which they can “do things that are useful for their everyday life”, they have learned “to be more responsible, more confident in what they do, and it has opened their view to other important things” such as getting involved in the needs of their community and being part of the change the community requires.

This was exactly what Staff Directory of Doral Academy Preparatory School saw in them so they didn’t hesitate in providing support for their project. “Our school is always open to support our students when they want to accomplish something positive, and even more when we see them actively interested in doing something good for the community” said Doral Academy Principal Mr. Carlos Ferralls.

Once their idea was approved by the school, Sofia and Carolina decided to ask for professional help in order to create a master piece, so they contacted The Art Shack Miami, a well-known, Doral based art studio recently awarded with the South Florida Parenting Kids 2015 Crown Award for their outstanding contribution to the community. Artist Laura Tobi and Muralist Alejandra Idarraga, were the professionals that worked hand to hand with Carolina and Sofia to make this idea a reality.

“The first thing that Carolina and Sofia told us when they came into our studio was that they were Girl Scouts and they wanted to create this amazing project as a legacy for the future, and as a way to inspire other youth through words of encouragement. We loved the idea and we felt very motivated to support them”, explained Tobi who decided to donate their talent and time to help the girls.

“We can’t resist being involved when a group of teenagers wants to use the language of art to inspire other people. We need to be there because it’s what we do. Art is one of the many ways to be creative and they wanted to use it to inspire their peers in their own way of saying things. They could have chosen to accomplish another project but they wanted to make their school a more beautiful place, more suitable to their ages, and a place where they can feel identified”, she added. The planning and execution of the project lasted about 4 days, and it incorporated modern and professional mural techniques that the girls learned while having fun in the process. The design of the mural was done so it portrays a neutral image with a mix of the basic colors of the school for a harmonious match including some phrases like “Knowledge is power”, “Education can be used to change the world”, “Education is a vehicle powered by self-confidence”, and “If you can dream it, you can do it”.

The Mural has truly been a success as indicated by Mr. Ferralls: “We are very pleased with the outcome of this mural, it is very well done, very well thought out. We know that they spent many hours and put a lot of effort doing it and the result speaks for itself; students liked it a lot and understand the message taught”. The effect of this project is expected to be extended as more Doral Academy students are invited to update the phrases on a regular basis.

Probably one of the most positive effects of the mural is the teaching and satisfaction that this community project left in their participants. As Carolina Barilari says, “I learned a lot doing this project and I want to share with my peers that we should never give up on what we want, always keep working for it, and don’t let others bring you down”. Sofia Florez adds “No matter what happens, always try your best because you can be amazing”.

Both girls are thankful for the support they received: “We want to thank God, who put three angels in our path to complete this project, The Art Shack, the principal of Doral Academy and our mothers for helping us”.

Doral Family Journal feels proud to congratulate them on a job well done and the example they set for this community.
