RRDSH Fine Arts Department: Breeding ground of rising stars.
Entering the hall of the Fine Arts Wing at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School is like trespassing the doors of a conservatory: angelic choir voices, guitars strumming, jazz resounding in the background, a group of young actors running their lines and girls in leotards doing pirouettes. Those are the rooms where the muses live.
The performances of any of the Fine Arts groups at the school auditorium are always packed, not only by the parents of those students but by friends and many people of the community that know it is quality entertainment at an affordable price and, many times, even for free. Whatever money raised by the performances is used to purchase props, maintain instruments or travel to competitions.
The amount of talent students in Doral have is extraordinary, and they count on extremely qualified and dedicated teachers that help them develop their natural abilities and even discover new ones when the students take the Fine Arts electives.
“The benefits of arts education have been proven time and time again,” expressed Mr. Alvaro Bermudez, the guitar teacher, who holds a Master degree in Jazz studies. “I believe it helps kids learn the power of concentrated work. It also develops abstract thinking and logic. It creates well rounded, ‘cultured’ individuals who become a benefit to their society. I am lucky to work here (in Doral). There is a ton of talent walking these streets. I’m not sure why but there is a lot of music in these kids’ brains and bodies. The greatest moment is when they gain acceptance into music school at the university or college level. I have students who are going to be great music professionals. That’s a wonderful thing.”
Mrs. Alicia Romero-Sardiñas, the choral director, also has words of praise for the students in Doral: “They often appear at my classroom door with a lot of raw talent. I personally believe that the students are so talented because they have parents who support them in their artistic endeavors and who also participate in arts for themselves. The parents are involved and encourage their student; that is their greatest strength: parent involvement”. Romero-Sardiñas, who is currently working on her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, had the satisfaction this year of bringing the Reagan Singers for the first time to the State Competition receiving an evaluation of Excellent, placing 2nd place at the traditional Coral Gables Caroling Competition for the third year in a row and achieving 2nd place at the Heritage Festival in New York and a Superior at the District Competition.
The Band Program, led by Mr. Fernando Collar received this year countless recognitions, including the State qualification of the Marching Band, Superior in Districts and second place at the Heritage Festival Performance in New York; Superior evaluation in Districts, First place and Outstanding Band evaluations at the Heritage Festival Performance in New York for the Wind Symphony Ensemble; State Superior in Solo and Ensemble for the students Pedro Millian-Jimenez, Antonio Pereira, Guillermo Garcia, and George Fernandez; State Superior the saxophone quartet of Hernan Bustamante, Juan Diko, Pedro Millan-Jimenez, and Lawrence Ramirez and individual Superior evaluations at State Competitions for students Nathan Erthal and Munawar Shareef.
The winter and spring shows, are the most important performances of the Fine Arts Department at RRDSH. This year’s “Romeo and Juliet” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” were a testament of the successful collaboration among all the Fine Arts Programs. Directed by acting teacher Alexandro Madruga and with the music direction of Mrs. Romero-Sardiñas, Mr. Bermudez and Mr. Collar, the young actors and singers of RRDSH experienced the excitement of Broadway in their own school’s auditorium. Special mention on these performances has to be given to student Marcos Barrios, whose portrayal of Pseudolus was an extraordinary display of his multiple histrionic talents.
Mrs. Romero-Sardiñas concluded this interview stating that “The classical arts have been proven to help students achieve in many ways, not only do they develop a well-rounded student, but they also foster initiative, creativity, leadership skills, and teach students to work as a team. Having these electives provides students with opportunities to find their niche in the school as well as grow as individuals in their respective arts.”
It is a privilege to count with these special programs available to all students at the only public high school in the city of Doral. The support and participation of the community are fundamental to maintain their continually evolving success.

El pasillo del Departamento de Artes Escénicas de Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School es en sí mismo un conservatorio: un arreglo coral, el rasgueo de guitarras, la banda de jazz sonando, un grupo de jóvenes actores practicando sus líneas y las bailarinas practicando. En los salones de ese corredor viven las musas.
Cualquier presentación de las diferentes disciplinas es siempre a casa llena en el auditorio de la escuela, y asisten no solamente los padres de los artistas sino también amigos y personas de la comunidad que saben que serán espectáculos de calidad a bajo precio o muchas veces gratuitos. El dinero que se recauda en la taquilla de las presentaciones es utilizado para adquirir materiales para las obras de teatro, para mantenimiento de los instrumentos o para contribuir a los costos de viajar a las diferentes competencias.
La cantidad de talento de los estudiantes de Doral es extraordinario y tienen la ventaja de contar con maestros extremadamente dedicados y calificados, quienes les ayudan a desarrollar sus habilidades naturales y a descubrir algunas nuevas, cuando estos estudiantes seleccionan las electivas de Artes Escénicas.
“Los beneficios de la educación en las artes han sido comprobados continuamente,” expresó el Sr. Álvaro Bermúdez, profesor de guitarra, quien tiene un Master en Jazz y ha enseñado en Reagan desde el 2007. “Creo que el arte ayuda a los jóvenes a concentrarse y les desarrolla el pensamiento abstracto y la lógica. El arte crea individuos integrales y cultos, que benefician a la sociedad. Tengo mucha suerte de trabajar en Doral, hay una tonelada de talento en estos jóvenes. Los cerebros y cuerpos de estos muchachos están llenos de música. Uno de los momentos más grandiosos es cuando les han aceptado para estudiar música a nivel universitario en excelentes instituciones. Muchos de mis estudiantes van a ser excelentes músicos profesionales. Eso es maravilloso y gratificante.”
La Sra. Alicia Romero-Sardiñas, directora del coro, no escatima palabras de alabanza para sus estudiantes: “Llegan a mi clase con talentos incipientes que luego desarrollan. Personalmente creo que son tan talentosos porque sus padres les apoyan en sus expresiones artísticas, e incluso muchos de sus padres participan en manifestaciones artísticas a su vez. Padres involucrados estimulan a los estudiantes, esa es la mayor fortaleza de los jóvenes de Doral.” Romero-Sardiñas, quien actualmente está finalizando su PhD en instrucción musical, tuvo este año la satisfacción de guiar a los Reagan Singers a su primera competencia estatal, donde obtuvieron la calificación de Excelencia. La agrupación también ha ganado por 3 años consecutivos el segundo lugar en la Competencia Navideña de Coral Gables y este año lograron el 2do lugar en el Heritage Festival de New York y la calificación Superior en la competencia distrital.
El programa de Banda, conducido por el profesor Fernando Collar, recibió este año incontables reconocimientos, llevando a la Banda Seca (Marching Band) a la competencia estatal, después de ganar evaluación Superior en los distritales y segundo lugar en Heritage Festival. El programa de Banda desarrolla otras agrupaciones que fueron premiadas también, como el Ensemble Sinfónico, quienes ganaron el primer lugar y la calificación “Outstanding” en Nueva York. Varios grupos de estudiantes seleccionados también recibieron premios a nivel Estatal, entre ellos: Pedro Millian-Jimenez, Antonio Pereira, Guillermo García, George Fernández, Hernán Bustamante, Juan Diko, Lawrence Ramírez, Nathan Erthal y Munawar Shareef.
Los show de invierno y primavera son los más importantes para el Departamento de Artes Escénicas de RRDSH. Las producciones de “Romeo y Julieta” y “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” demostraron la exitosa colaboración entre todos los programas del departamento. Dirigidos por el profesor de actuación, Sr. Alexandro Madruga y con la dirección musical de la Sra. Romero-Sardiñas, Sr. Bermúdez y Sr. Collar, los actores y cantantes tuvieron una experiencia de Broadway en el auditorio de su propia escuela. En estas presentaciones destacó el estudiante Marcos Barrios, quien con sus múltiples talentos musicales e histriónicos deleitó a la audiencia, en especial en su papel de Pseudolus.
Romero-Sardiñas concluyó esta entrevista comentando que “las artes clásicas ayudan mucho a los estudiantes, les convierten en individuos con iniciativa, creatividad y liderazgo y les ayudan a trabajar en equipo. Estas electivas proporcionan la oportunidad a los estudiantes para encontrar su nicho en la escuela y la comunidad, al tiempo que desarrollan sus talentos artísticos.”
Es un privilegio contar con estos programas especiales, disponibles para todos los estudiantes en la única escuela secundaria pública de la ciudad de Doral. El apoyo y participación de la comunidad son fundamentales para el éxito continuo de estas actividades.
