THE ART SHACK

 By Claudia Drago.

From those early drawings or cardboard boxes that we transformed into robots, everyone can remember the art we created when we were kids. And while not all of us became professional painters or sculptors, those first steps helped us develop our thinking and creative process.

The Art Shack is an Art Studio for children from ages two to adults. They have regular programs, special programs and they prepare children to enter the Art Magnet schools. They also has other programs such as Cartoon, Photography and The Art Shack Attack, a series of visits to museums, art galleries and artists’ studios, during which the space is open for the group and children have the opportunity to share with their families.

9R_TBBQYkoDHopi129KY6bfRtSF3iC_LJ5y3h_bwZko“The goal is to develop the creative process, because not every person who come to our doors is going to be an artist, but to keep our minds thinking creatively is important for any human being. As children grow, they transition through different stages of art and these stages are attached to their psychosocial development. We have a lot of respect for these stages, we do not expect our students to paint like an adult nor we do not want them to be inspired by an artist if it doesn´t have any meaning for them,” said to Doral Family Journal Laura Tobi, one of the Directors of The Art Shack.

During the classes for children from two years, the main goal is stimulate their sensory examination, being aware or learning the environment in which they live. And art is used as a way to express what they know and thus learn to understand the environment in which they are. They have the opportunity to explore their sensory activity and the work focuses on the process itself. The Art Shack works with open and semi – open tasks, which allows children to learn aesthetic themes appropriate for their age. If necessary, and for all the tasks given, children search for documentation to develop each project.

At The Art Shack they work in sculpture, painting, they work with traditional materials and paints that are made in the studio, they create their own mixes. All kinds of drawing materials are used, from chalk pastels, oil pastels, and charcoal. And they also use many recycled materials.

“The work we do is intense and since each child works on his own project, they require a very close attention. So we have one teacher for every five students. Our classes have a maximum of 15 -16 children, but there is always one teacher for every five students or more. Sometimes the teacher-student ratio is much lower, especially with the little ones. Sometimes there is a teacher for every three students. This allows us to pay attention to the needs of each kid. It allows us to listen to them, to understand what each child wants to express, and to learn about the ideas the may have. There is more dialogue; there is a lot of dialogue. The dialogue and expression are extremely important for us. We consider each child as a complete human being, who needs to talk, to move. Each one of them has its own time to finish and complete their work. They might create something and perhaps they do not like it and they want to throw it away and that’s fine for us too,” commented the directors of The Art Shack, Laura Tobi and Paula Vazquez.

tqa2hJAbasA-meGoL3edAmRR2w0G4tNBKR5MGhagaw0The product is important but it is not the center of the work, the most important thing is the creative process. This is one of the reasons why 100 % of the students coached by The Art Shack to prepare their portfolios to enter Magnet schools in Miami they did it successfully. Magnet schools are public schools similar to Charter schools. Magnet schools have special programs that attract a certain group of children, children go there not because they are located within the boundaries of the district, or according to the geographical distribution of the school, but they choose them because there is a program they want to join. There are Magnet schools of Science, Language, and Technology. And there are Art Magnet Schools, there are Magnet School of Dance, Magnet School of Orchestras and there are schools that also have TV. In Miami, the Art Magnet schools are the best schools in the city and they are among the 100 top – ranked public schools.

Another program they have at The Art Shack are Day Camps, when it is a holiday for banks, schools and government offices, children can spend a fun day creating an art project at the studio.

Through their Photography program, which lasts between 8-10 classes, children learn the management of the sensitivity, speed, and aperture. The jobs they do are amazing, in the third class they paint with light. The photography course has two levels and to join they don’t have to have a professional camera. Visits to Hammock Park and Lincoln Road are made as part of the program.

Recently, The Art Shack has been selected by Livestrong Foundation to bring to the City of Doral the Pablove Shutterbugs (http://www.pablove.org/shutterbugs/) program which provides pediatric cancer patients and survivors between 6 and 18 years the opportunity to learn photography at no cost. To provide the funds necessary to develop this project the Foundation requires the community to vote for the selected institution. Voting began on March 24 at 11 am and ends on April 11 at 6 pm. You can vote for the Art Shack once per e- mail you have through the following link: http://vote.livestrong.org/applicant/97-the_art_sh/

The Art Shack works with children with special needs, they work with children with autism and with children with other diagnoses. They work together with the group and most of the times the other kids don’t know about their condition and they work together as one integrating them, explained Laura Tobi .

The Art Shack has been at their current location for three years, before that Laura  had a mobile workshop which she run for 10 years until it grew to 40 students. Now they have about 200 students, with the normal variations of the seasons and the holidays.

“Throughout all the programs offered by The Art Shack we aim to generate awareness among parents about the importance of the art in our city, explained Laura Tobi. “Keeping the body active is as important as keeping the mind active. But unfortunately the school does not offer many opportunities for creativity. And this is not just in the arts, there are no creative spaces in math or in science. Nor in any other classes, so we incorporate aspects of these contents in our classes. For example we are preparing a summer camp, for our science and art camp we’ll be generating greenhouses inside balloons. And then the kids are going to be planting. Or when Halloween comes, instead of carving the pumpkin, we cut it in half, fill it with soil and they can watch their plants growing within a week. All these activities mixed with art generates a much richer experience for the kids,” she added.

At The Art Shack, its directors, teachers and consultants they know the children very well, they know their families, know what their favorite color is, the material they like to work with and which are their favorite themes. They way they work with each child or adolescent is different. Since the way of thinking is different for each one, therefore, how they create will be different. Each program at The Art Shack is customized.  The next step for The Art Shack is to open another branch. But in order to keep it personalized, the idea is not to grow and create a mega studio but to maintain what has had such excellent results throughout the years. Another goal the Art Shack has for 2014 is to create a coaching program for admissions to College. Applications to enter colleges may be difficult, there are too many offers and information regarding scholarships can be overwhelming. So they are looking to bring people from the Universities to speak about the options available.

The Art Shack is located at 9831 NW 58 ST, Suite # 145. Doral. For more information about The Art Shack you can visit their website at www.thearshackmiami.com or you can contact them at 786-473-1708 / 305-331-2297.

THE ART SHACK

The Art Shack – Misión Cumplida:

Doral. Para mas información pueden visitar su página web www.thearshackmiami.com o comunicarse al 786-473-1708 / 305-331-2297.
