Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center’s PTSA: Changing the Guard.

The school year is almost over and during this busy time many exciting things are taking place at Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center. On April 25th, EBT’s PTSA (Parent, Teacher and Student Association) greeted a new team willing to give continuity to this fantastic volunteer program, and prepared to say good-bye to one of the most dedicated and valuable members it has ever had.

Often PTSA board members leave school following their children’s academic path on to high school.  This is the case of Carmen Olmos, the departing PTSA president, who has been actively committed to EBT for over 11 years.  During the past two years, as PTSA president, she has guided this group of volunteers in an exceptionally dynamic way; not only to accomplish goals within the school but also in our community.  Together with Carmen, the exiting board members, (a group of committed parents, teachers, students and administrative staff) worked specially hard this year and have volunteered relentlessly enhancing the educational experience of the students.

Some of the projects through which EBT’s PTSA has supported the school are:

• Provided classrooms with Smart Boards.
• Annual Renewal of the Cambridge Program License.
• Supported EBT’s school band and cheerleaders.
• Purchased students’ awards for Honor Rolls and Perfect Attendance assemblies.
• Sponsored various special events throughout the year like Black History Month, Career Day, and Hispanic Heritage Month among others.
• Supported children with financial hardship.

 Ximena Lozano is EBT’s newly elected PTSA president.  She has lived in Doral for the past 4 years.  She is the mother of two boys, David and Mathew, and has volunteered in the school since her arrival.   Lozano is confident that her team, together with the support of the school’s staff, will perform successfully in order to be able to accomplish the objectives for this coming school year. Membership: María Isabel Arce, Membership Advisor: Ximena Segredo, V.P. Events: Lizbeth Manrique, Events Advisor: Inmaculada Infante, Treasurer: Georgette Alfonzo, Treasurer Advisor: Mónica Brito, Recording Secretary: Janet Chiriboga, Corresponding Secretary: Techie Guzmán and Community Liaison: Angie González.

El PTSA de la escuela Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center,  cambio de guardia.

El año escolar está llegando a su fin, y en la escuela Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 están ocurriendo muchas actividades interesantes.  El pasado 25 de abril, la Organización de Padres, Maestros y Estudiantes (PTSA) de EBT le dio la bienvenida a un nuevo equipo dispuesto a darle continuidad a este maravilloso programa de voluntariado; e igualmente se despidió de algunos de los integrantes más valiosos que jamás haya tenido esta organización.

Con frecuencia los miembros del PTSA se van de la escuela siguiendo los pasos académicos de sus hijos que van a la secundaria.  Este es el caso de Carmen Olmos, la presidenta saliente, quien ha sido un miembro activo de EBT por más de once años.  Durante los últimos dos años, como presidente del PTSA, Carmen supo guiar a este grupo de voluntarias de una forma extraordinaria y dinámica para sobrepasar, no sólo metas dentro de la escuela, sino en nuestra comunidad.  Junto a Carmen, otros miembros salientes (padres, maestros, estudiantes y personal administrativo) también han dado todo de si para trabajar de forma voluntaria en pro del realce de la experiencia educativa de los alumnos.

Algunos de los proyectos en los que el PTSA ha apoyado a la escuela son:

• Suministro de los Smart-boards o pizarras electrónicas.
• Renovación de la licencia del Programa Cambridge.
• Apoyo a la orquesta y a las porristas.
• Compra de diplomas y premios para los estudiantes.
• Patrocinio de varios eventos de la escuela como “Career Day”, Mes de la Hispanidad entre otros.
• Ayuda a niños de bajos recursos.

Ximena Lozano es la nueva presidente del PTSA y vive en Doral desde hace 4 años.  Es madre de dos niños, David y Mathew, y ha sido voluntaria en EBT desde que llegó a nuestra ciudad.  Ximena tiene plena fe en que su equipo, junto con el apoyo del personal de la escuela, logrará con éxito los objetivos para el próximo año escolar.  La nueva junta que trabajará junto a ella está formada por:  Ildiko González y Giuseppina Mannino: V.P.
