Biden withdraws from presidential race, endorses Kamala Harris

DORAL, FL – President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he is withdrawing his candidacy for the upcoming 2024 presidential race.

“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said via X (former Twitter).

He also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the announcement, while encouraging voters to donate to her campaign. “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

“On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country,” U.S. Vice President, Kamala Haris, responded through her X account.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” she added. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda.  If you’re with me, add a donation right now.”

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also endorsed Kamala Harris after Biden’s dropped out of the presidential race.

“We join millions of Americans in thanking President Biden for all he has accomplished, standing up for America time and again, with his North Star always being what’s best for the country. We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her,” the Clintons said in a joint statement.

In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump, who was recently the target of an assassination attempt, said Biden “was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve.” While also adding, “we will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly.”

In addition, Trump, officially nominated by the Republican Party on Thursday night, told CNN in an interview, Joe Biden is the “worst president by far in the history of our country.”

There was an emergency meeting of senior Democratic National Committee members happening Sunday. Chair Jaime Harrison said Sunday afternoon that “in the coming days, the Party will undertake a transparent and orderly process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November.”

“This process will be governed by established rules and procedures of the Party. Our delegates are prepared to take seriously their responsibility in swiftly delivering a candidate to the American people,” Harrison stated.

Joe Biden has expressed he will address the nation later this week following his announcement.
